Buying train tickets with cash

Hi everyone,
Just wondering if this is possible... I'd like to stop carrying my credit/debit card around all the time, but still get a train. It's about a 10 minute journey and at the times I travel there is no ticket office either end, just a machine that only takes cards. Apart from walking up the train to find the conductor (and I'm not even sure I'd have enough time to do that), does anyone else have any other ideas? They do make it difficult to buy tickets at times!
Thanks,
Rosemary

We buy our tickets in advance and get them posted.0

The postage would be almost as much as the ticket, and I don't always know far enough in advance. I do have some regular trips though so might be able to make it a partial solution by buying several at the start of the month, so I only need my card once. Although I can only collect them at the far station, not the near one!0 -
Have you checked all delivery options? Southern don't charge for First Class postage, only Signed For & Special Delivery.
Managing to get where you want to go with Southern at the moment being a completely different matter!

Do they do E tickets?0

I feel naked without my credit card!
Maybe you could get another card with a low limit to carry always and use for things like this.0 -
Are you carrying a Smartphone? Does the ticket machine take payments by Apple/Android Pay?
Scotrail also send tickets by post without charge, although you need to order them far enough in advance for the mail to get to you otherwise the post option won't be available when you order.0 -

It'd have to have about a £10 limit... for the same reason I'm trying to avoid putting Android pay on my phone.
Agrinnall it's Scotrail I travel with anyway, so if they want to post me a £1.40 ticket instead of letting me pay in cash that is at least their cost! Think that'll be the best solution, I'll just have to get organised. Thanks all.0 -

Perfectly possible to get a card and ask them to set the limit at ten pounds and they will do so... however with a limit so low it is easy to go over by a few pence and then have to pay extra charges. I think the lowest card limit I had was about fifty pounds (and the highest was 15,000, a seriously scary amount!).
If your reluctance to carry a card is because of security concerns, I should mention that I have always had a card with me since about 1980 and have never lost a single penny to fraud. If this is about budgeting and resisting temptation, you might find a prepaid card helpful.0 -

Would you like to say something about your sig line?
I think I understand the Spanish (is the last phrase in the imperfect subjunctive?) but why did you choose that set of words to represent yourself? Do you think the sentiment applies to most people in Scotland?0 -

Thanks - I'm not worried about fraud or anything like that, it's not even budgeting per se, I'm trying to lose weight so want to not be able to buy coffee and snacks when I'm out.0
