Help with Bristow & Sutor council tax arrear

Hi

I've been reading this forum and a few others for the past hour or so. But I couldn't find the problem I am currently facing.

I received an email today from Bristow & Sutor claiming that I have to pay an outstanding amount of some £900. The only thing mentioned is that is it the council tax arrears.

I was a full time international student in the UK and came back to my home country this year. While I was there (in the UK) I had no visits from them neither did I received any emails.

I am also aware that council tax does not apply to full time students. I don't understand what I have to pay that amount for.

I am really confused and would appreciate any advice I can get.

Thank you :)

Call them and explain why you do not believe that you should be liable for the Council Tax. Speaking to the Council authority concerned may also prove to be useful.

Council Tax applies to students like everyone else - what is the case however is that they can apply for a disregard (an exemption may then be granted) if they provide full proof of their qualifying status to the council.

The most likely explanations are that the council don't have your student details or for some reason you did not qualify. There's also the less likely explanation that even disregarded students can have a council tax charge to pay in some cases.

I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.

I suggest contacting the council directly about this to explain. The bailiffs will just try to collect on the instructions of the council.
