Backdated Energy Bill

Hi all,
I recently switched energy suppliers (Npower to Scottish Power) for my DP.
He provided a final meter read which resulted in a final bill of £1500 over a period of 9 months!!
I called them and they say it's because they've been estimating his readings for the past 2 years. From what I understand, they can't back bill for more than 12 months, but the bill is dated Oct-June. Any advice please? They already took the money from his account so he called his bank and they got his money back on an indemnity claim, which was Npowers suggestion.
Thanks again,
Kellan
