Mortgage offer DECLINED - Underwriter help PLEASE!

Hello!
So Halifax Declined my mortgage after the fraud team / underwriters looked into it. I was self employed (and hardly working) then I went employed at this venue (now working full time). I had 9m off sick last year and only worked 16hr a week for the month 3m. Now I'm recovered and loving my new employed security I've now had my mortgage offer decline :sad:
I've been self employed in this venue for 10 years, not really working much past 3 years and I've had 2 children and claiming tax credits etc to top up my income. Kids off to school September so in April I started working full time. I AM GUTTED! They given me no reason and I don't know what the future holds? I have applied now with Natwest (who my current mortgage is with) but I'm not holding any hope as they now want to contact HMRC about my earnings (I guess) yes it has been low but I've had x2 maternity breaks.
I'm putting down almost 40% deposit (from gifted (10%) but mainly equity (30%)
Why are they doing this?! What do I have to do to get a mortgage? I eventually have job security and now they won't lend me money?! Fraud?! For what?!
I'm just about to lose the house opposite my mums house in the catchment for my children's school and I want to cry :-(
Please can anyone tell me WHY and WHAT I can do?!
Thanks anyone who can comment xxxx

It looks like you are changing your employment status in order to get a job.
eg self employed you earned say £10k a year, but you now conveniently just before you want a mortgage switch jobs to a higher paid employed position.
From an underwriters perspective, it can look dodgy and it is something I as a broker also have to be on the look out for.I am a Mortgage AdviserYou should note that this site doesn't check my status as a mortgage adviser, so you need to take my word for it. Reading your post, it looks like you are applying to lenders directly?
Applying to and subsequently being rejected by lenders directly can screw your credit rating.
Given your switch in employment status, maternity breaks and time off sick, I would engage a decent whole of market broker ASAP. Don't delay.
A decent broker will be able to go through your case in detail and work out which lender(s) your application can be best placed with.
Good luck.0
