I googled to find some information of my own and came across this thread. It made me want to sign up just so I could reply.

I don't understand why everyone seems to be turning on the OP. They came here for some factual advice and asked some straightforward questions. When I read the rules of the forum it states that it is a sight for people to gain helpful information, not to be judged.
It seems a lot of you are judging this person for a circumstance they have found themselves in and little do we know it may very well have been unforeseen.
Comments like "should have budgeted better" etc seems somewhat patronising and irrelevant. The OP stated in one of their replies that their mother had passed away and they split with a partner during the time of study. No one seems to be acknowledging this. But yet somehow seem to be very quick to decide the OP is irresponsible. Do you really think they anticipated the death of their mother? I am unsure of how the OP responded as the threads have been deleted but at a guess I'd say it was somewhat offensive or uncalled for. Though they later do state they are making judgements just as they too were judged. The fact that some of you seem to disregard what they have said about their mothers passing and go on to write them off is nothing short of hypocrisy and double standards . The OP wanted advice and clearly states the questions they want advice on. Yet as soon as they explain further of their circumstance (which they didn't need to) gets further abuse about being irresponsible. Did it never occur that perhaps this person is still grieving and need some quick advice ?
I am not defending any behaviour the OP may have verbally responded with which may have caused offence but surely if you are going to cast judgement on others instead of answering clearly stated questions in a factual manner then you should be prepared to be judged yourselves?
As I said I googled for some advice and came across the MSE forum so signed up. More fool me if the responses on here are anything to go by.

Whilst I agree that some posts about 'should have budgeted better' were maybe unhelpful, the reason people turned on the OP was because s/he started throwing personal insults at people replying to the thread. Simples!
Ex board guide. Signature now changed (if you know, you know).

Taking this on face value - because this board has been plagued by newbies turning nasty over the last few days - then no, you don't understand because you have no idea what the OP said. And if you signed up only to have a go at people without knowing any of the facts, then that seems to be an entirely odd thing to do. It is very simply a fact that, no matter what the circumstances, budgeting on the brink without anything to fall back on for even a week or two is not a sensible thing to do. If you can only afford non-essentials by doing that, then you are paying for too many non-essentials. The OP knew that the summer break was coming, and had no guarantee of obtaining employment; and their grant appears to have been intended to cover vacations as well. So the comments about this are entirely legitimate. It is not a responsible thing to do to assume you can spend up on things you want, so that you have nothing if things go wrong - as they have.

Just because the OP didn't like the advice does not excuse the disgraceful tantrum they threw and the personal attack on another poster.

OK I'm not a regular just a working adult with plenty of life/employment experience.

Whatever has brought OP so close to the breadline is the real problem, and not his new employer. The reasons for the delayed pay are known and no reason to think they will not be resolved.

To not go to work when that was the best way to get things sorted with a cash advance or similar is an almost childlike response and has simply jeapordised the employment. This on top of the concern the employer already has about the omission regarding previous time working/trialling for them.

If OP is genuine, then there are clearly a number of issues affecting their decision making, but the simple answer is that very few, if any, of their issues can be placed at the employer's door.

Maybe I'm missing something, though I have read carefully but, if the OP was "forced" to do this extra training to qualify for a different dept., are they not employed??? There is something odd here. Did the OP quit her job to take this training? Why, in the current climate, would anyone do that? Was the OP fired? How can we know? Asking for more information in order to better respond to requests for information is not unnecessary.

Sangie595, please do not stop posting. You are one of the most knowledgeable people on here about employment law, from what I have read and, as you said yourself, it will be the genuine people in need of your expertise who suffer... and don't forget it is the summer hols, though not, I believe, in Scotland.

I'm just sorry that I missed the personal insults I believe were aimed at me
the OP came her and posted at length describing how their " wellbeing was put at risk because employer didn't pay me"

I apologise that my comments about their inability to budget better was so offensive to the OP - although I firmly stand by them
her/his well being was put at risk because s/he thought that a two week window was enough time to set up payroll for a new employee ( which I don't think it is these days)

no doubt when the payroll is set up s/he will be shocked to discover that s/he is paying emergency tax on her/his earnings - which will probably be HMRC's fault too.

I would consider that internet and phone bills were less of a priority than transport to work - but that is my opinion.

so Daisyfresh - sorry if you consider my replies were patronising - but I stand by them 100 %
because anybody old enough to be completing/have completed two degrees SHOULD have the skills to manage their money - and is entitled to a student bank account with an associated overdraft facility.

And there we go. I had plenty of time to fully read and understand your post, but as yet another newbie who has come here only to insult people, you wouldn't be interested in any response that you didn't agree with. I must assume that you are the OP/ the person who keeps inventing new personas this week to attack people here.

Smodlet, I have no intention of stopping posting, if only to ruin jondav's day. This "regular" is going to be here for ever, and ever, and ever...

If people post on a public forum, they must expect, assuming they are even genuine in the first place, that they will get answers that they don't like. That doesn't make the answers wrong, it makes them ones they should think about seriously, even if they end up rejecting them. Of course, if they are posting increasingly ridiculous stories just to get a reaction, then they are achieving their aim when they get one - but that reflects on them, not on the people who give up time to make the effort to read and reply. It seems that the game this week is to slag off the "regulars" - well, if it weren't for the regulars on this board and many others, there wouldn't be any point coming here. You could go to one of those other sites, many of whom seem to get no answers half the time because they have nobody with the skills and experience to answer.

And it is about skills and experience - sometimes that experience is life experience, and it comprises advice about not getting into the situation again. This OP got both answers about their current situation (albeit not ones they liked since they couldn't do much about not being paid on time) and ones about not getting into this situation again.

Unfortunately, the problem with a successful public forum is that you also get the abusers and the idiot trolls, who delight in nothing more than trying to damage the site and the people using it.

But slagging off the "regulars" (by the way jondav, looking at your post count it appears that you are a "regular" too) and taking every opportunity to pounce on them is simply an attempt to drive them away. And replace them with what? As I commented on the other thread, this site has a reputation of driving away its most experienced posters, and the boards are littered with professional advisors who have given their time freely in the past and are now gone, fed up of the constant attacks on them. This has happened on every board, as far as I can see. Does that harm them? No it doesn't. But it does erode the quality of the advice available to people who come here - and some of them, the majority of them, are in genuine need, and some are desperate.

Well said, kazzah and Sangie595. Unless it is cash in hand (illegal?) who gets paid two weeks into a new job? I would allow at least two months if at all possible and, if a dire emergency came up and this was not possible, I would crawl to work on my hands and knees if that was the only way to get there and work for at least two weeks, covering myself with glory at every opportunity, before I dared to ask a new employer for any favours whatsoever. I imagine many reasonable employers might be willing to offer "subs" to an employee who had shown how willing and hard working they were.

What about asking around at work to see if anyone lives near you, OP? You could always offer to chip in for petrol as soon as you get paid. Communication, it's a wonderful thing... isn't that what we used to do, before all this interwebby stuff? :rotfl:

I, too, thought the Daisy one was the OP in another guise... and I missed all the excitement, too :(
