Heat ring on oak table

Options
I recently bought a second hand solid oak table which is generally in pretty good nick to say it is about 80 yrs old.
It does have one heat ring on it and I tried today with a JML Wood Restorer product which claimed to remove heat rings. It does not seem to have done any good.
I can't afford to pay to have the table re-polished. Does anyone have any old style tips which might help?

  • Hiya

I don't know if this will work but my daughter once had a white ring on a polished table and I managed to get it out by using toothpaste. You just rub in it with a circular motion using a dry soft cloth, do it a little at a time then afterwards buff it up and polish. The toothpaste is just abrasive enough to remove the whiteness but not too strong to damage. It took quite a long time as you have to do a little at a time.

  • Thanks PancakeQueen,
I will see if I can pluck up the courage to try that in the morning.

  • Just got 3 heat rings off a table by using half part olive oil and half white vinegar- worked a treat after trying the toothpaste method which helped slightly but not completely. :j

Take a good dollop of mayonase on a paper kitchen towel plonk it on the satain leave it for a while (not sure how long is best) then wipe it off and polish. If not ompletely removed do it again.

    Works most times for me.
I started with nothing and I am proud to say I still have most of it left.
  • I've read that cigarette ash works. Though not being a smoker, and ash being difficult to get hold of, can't say I've tried it.

Will be trying toothpaste and olive oil on a Freecycled table that I have, with a similar ring (I keep it covered by a bowl ;) ).
