Ex gambler and mortgage

Hi there,

I'm after some advice. I've read loads about people having gambling transactions on their bank statements and how the bank views it in terms of getting a mortgage. I have no such transactions as stopped gambling very quickly so have not done it for months and months. Not for me, pointless activity.

I'm probably worrying over nothing but I am about to have a mortgage application process started and wondering a few things.

As my title suggests, I had a brief and very pointless flirt with online gambling. Did not affect my credit, realised quickly it wasn't for me and haven't tried it again. Never will, done and dusted. This was over six months ago. I have six months of clean statements (only one bank account) which are a very boring read. I have a mortgage in principal agreed and around 74% LTV. A big deposit, never missed a payment etc, managed credit well and excellent credit with Equifax. I earn just under £40k and my partner is on £25k.

Kicking myself for trying something so stupid but now it's starting to worry me. Do I have anything to worry about? I've even seen people on here get approved with large sums going to bookies on their statements!

Thanks for reading!

  • Just adding that I'm never overdrawn although have an agreed overdraft and never near CC limits, I utilise 12% of available credit for day to day. Broker has seen supplied statements and described it as an open and shut case. Thanks.

Have a look on the Match Betting board, got hundreds of people here on this site that do online gambling. Someone there may have experience of getting a mortgage with gambling transactions on their current account.

Recently got approved for a mortgage with rather a lot of gambling transactions as I do matched betting. I kept my statements fairly clean for about 3 months before applying to show that I didn't have an addiction.

That long ago I would guess that you don't have much to worry about.

It's unlikely the bank will go back that far. If they do, most just treat it as regular outgoings. Are we talking a lot?
  • Thanks for the responses. Not a huge amount. Could the bank go further than six months? Been in current job for 12 years. Was a moment of stupidity over six months back!

Yes, you are worrying about something that won't come up in your application.

There is nothing stupid about doing gambling on line, hundreds of people on this site alone do it to make an extra income. As I have mentioned check out the Match Betting forum on this site.

The Match Betting forum is about taking advantage of bookmaker offers, so in reality people using that board are not actually gambing, but they do use gambling websites.

I'm sure you'll be fine, I've been match betting for years, applied for car loans, credit cards etc during that period with no problems. I haven't applied for a mortgage though.

I think it's safe to say you're worrying about nothing. Most only want 3 months worth of statements and judging by all the rest of the info given with re. to good credit and not being in your overdraft etc, there wouldn't be a reason for them to want to see any more statements ...

Good luck and I'm sure you'll be fine !
