mums 60th next September party ideas please

Hi All

Its mums 60th birthday next year and we want to make it really special....

the plan so far is to hire a cottage/house for the weekend something nice and maybe a bit special/posh, so any help with this would be great. Most of the family live in Devon Exeter/Plymouth so Devon/Cornwall/Somerset/Wilts would be fine....

There will be 10 adults and 7 boys ages 2 , 2 1/2, 7, 10, 10, 12, 14. (All adults (apart from mum and dad) are in their 30's, 5 men 5 woman.....

Any ideas for games or anything else would be fantastic.... or any suitable themes.....

We really are open to any ideas so hoping that if we start planning now it will all go ok.... and hopefully be money saving!

thanks in advance.....

    Hi

We also have a large family (18 when we're all together). If we are together for a few days, such as at Xmas, we usually have a family quiz. Obviously someone needs to write/research the questions, making sure there are questions suitable for all ages but this probably takes us 2-3 hours (often spread over several weeks - while watching TV etc). On the evening, we split the family up into teams (i.e. Mum from one family with Dad from another and kids from another) and from there it is just mayhem!

Everyone loves it, especially the kids who are very competitive. It takes ages longer than you expect (we usually start around 7.30 and it never finished before 11) because of the general taunting of any team that is obviously struggling for an answer etc.

It's great fun, costs nothing apart from refreshements and it's even educational to a degree!

Good luck with the celebration. We still talk about my mum's 60th and it was 14 years ago!

  • thanks, anyone else!
  • ok we've found a venue, a large thatched cottage with swimming pool that we will stay the week in. Its near the beach so that should kill some time.... any other ideas to make it special?
Ideas we have so far is cocktail evening, mobile therapist for mum, get caterers in (or cook a posh meal ourselves!)

Any other ideas would be appreciated..... :T
  • How about
    • fancy dress evening with prize for the best outfit made from recyclable stuff?
    • cinema evening with a good family DVD and popcorn etc. Cool Runnings always goes down a treat here
    • walks on the beach can be a bit boring for kids - what about a treasure hunt or prize for the most interesting thing brought back or for the greatest amount of things you can get into a matchbox
    • birthday tea - children help prepare eg decorate room with balloons, banners etc in secret, make cakes (supervised)...
  • What about giving the children a disposable camera each so that they could put together a photo record for your mum? Could be a Xmas present later in the year.
