Should i start looking for a new job now ?

I have been with my current employer for around 7 years now but changes within the company have made me start hating it more and more. I was recently passed up for promotion for a job i was practically already doing and the candidate who got it came from another branch where the person hiring has just come from and are already very well acquainted which i would have been fine with had they had the more experience than me in the position but they had not which left me feeling a bit down as i thought loyalty would count for something (a few years ago it would have).

Recently the company has also been making a lot of people redundant in the department i work in and i feel its only a matter of time before my options are redundancy or taking another pay cut (already had to cut my hours once and lost a fair amount of money by doing so)

So i'm torn, i've been applying for other jobs and i have an interview for one coming up but i'm not sure that if i am lucky enough to get it i should accept or not ? And if not to keep applying for others.

Looking for some advice on what you would do in this position.

Thanks

Wait until you are offered the job then worry about whether or not to accept it.

Can you see a pattern in those being made redundant,e.g. age, gender, skills (or lack of), length of service? Can you see if there is a definitely a place in the company for your department?

    Keep applying for other jobs.

I was in a similar position 2 years ago. The company had been bought by a rival and was undergoing massive restructuring. People were either choosing to leave or being made redundant and nobody was happy. I had got stuck in a dead end position where I was being ignored for promotion or even redundancy. When I'd finally had enough and quit for another job the first question my boss asked me was "what took you soon long?"

It's not good for your job satisfaction to be working somewhere that's falling apart around you. Eventually it becomes bad for your career as others employers will wonder why you are still there.

The jobs market and recruiting process has changed a lot in the last 5-10 years. It certainly can't hurt refreshing your CV, contacting recruiters to see what out there, applying for jobs and going for interviews. Even if you get offered a job then you don't have to accept it.

I found it useful having interviews even if I wasn't that interested in the job just for the practice as I had been with the same company for so long.
  • It may be worth sprucing up your CV and applying for more jobs to see what else is out there before making any abrupt decisions to leave. Going to interviews and refining your skills is useful to refine your interview skills after you've been in the same job for a while. Don't just accept anything that comes along for the sake of it - it might be worse than what you've left behind!
