My mum used to make a kind of toffee sauce as a coating that went hard and crunchy when cooled down

my auntie did this on a camping stove in a tent - I have never been able to recreate it.

    Thanks everyone.

I actually used a spray bottle with olive oil rather than Flylight - I detest Frylight as it is such bad news for non-stick pans so just accept those extra calories. They're a drop in the ocean compared with the volume of wine & chocolate :)

I love the ideas on here. I'm going to try:
    - Making the dry mix up and adding ready to a shaker before the popcorn is popped
    - Tipping into a bag while still warm and shaking like mad
    - Adding the coating to the pan they're cooked in and stirring like mad (I suspect a baked on sticky mess will result, but I'll try anything once.
    - Trying a caramel topping, but maybe a little more runny and adding to 1/3 of the popcorn before mixing it into everything else.

I'll report back on the success of each method after the weekend. It's gonna take a while to get through that many batches, but we're more than up to the task.

And while 'getting used to it plain' is certainly something to think about in the future, I've promised my OH that although I'm going to make an effort to cut back on shopping costs, he's not going to notice a cut back on enjoyment. Luckily we do have the disposable income, so I'm just trying to eradicate wasted money . He's not going to be on board with eating the equivalent of dry cardboard instead of his previous yummy snacks!

    I've been Money Tipped!
    I use this:

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00505PGMC/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It's a professional topping used in cinemas.

It seems expensive but you need less that a teaspoon for a large batch - a box lasts us well over 6 months.

Just put olive oil and the Flavacol in the pan with one kernel... when it pops you know the oil is ready and can add the rest - heat and shake.

It smells and tastes just like fairground popcorn.

I'm such a popcorn fanatic that I bought a whirly pop pan from the US to make stirring easier.

It's paid for itself many times over.
