Yes, you are confused, the OP is not on gardening leave: "I've not been put on gardening leave...".
  • "Getting signed off for stress" - Do people do this because work is making them a bit upset? Really? Shouldn't it be for people dealing with depression and diagnosed clinical problems.

There's a difference between stress and pressure. You're experiencing unpleasant pressure. It'll be over with in a few weeks. Chill out, don't work too hard, don't burn any bridges further..

People move jobs - it's common and it happens. They need to deal with it - and you need to learn to deal with your colleges reaction.

They do indeed get signed off for this sort of thing and less. It's easy to fake. So the people who really are ill end up being disbelieved by everyone, because it happens so much. Remember the old "nod and a wink" that went with someone having backache? Well it's stress now. As a sickness it is now totally discredited by employers, who tend not to believe it. And you can't blame them entirely when you look at how it is misused. I'm afraid I have to be honest and say that I see a lot of feigned stress, particularly when it comes to disciplinaries. Nobody expects someone to be happy about a disciplinary, but it is astonishing how many people get signed off because of one. And doctors are partly to blame - I think they write work related stress on fit notes far too easily. It's meaningless as a diagnosis, one- sided as an opinion, and it's insulting to people who really have mental health problems.

I recall sitting in an HR managers office having robust debate about stressors in the workplace, he brought out a sizeable box containing a lot of sick lines and challenged me to find one where an individual had been signed off with work related stress.

That must be unusual. What's the workplace? In 2014/15 stress accounted for 35% of all work related sickness and 48% of all days lost to sickness, according to the HSE.

    Arguably, there shouldn't be any.

A doctor is qualified to judge whether the patient is ill but, with this kind of problem, he actually has no evidence as to what is making them ill. For all he knows they patient could have all kinds of personal issues but be working in the most perfect work environment. OK, they may be too ill to go to work in which case he is correct to sign them off but he is not in a position to assert that work caused the problem.

Or the GP is being asked to be creative and record a more forgiving reason to cover the absense. I think most can agree on the state of play here but fear and anxiety from the patient are coming into play.

It is painful for now but just get through it as previous advice. I was in the same situation 10 years ago and it's just a distant memory now :)

Have some fun activities after work to look forward to with your loved ones and be kind to yourself. You've been a good colleague / employee for 8 years and this opportunity to commute less is too good to pass up.

    Good luck.
