Any up and coming industries for retraining in?

My partner has been made redundant and is looking into retraining but neither of us really have any idea about what sort of jobs will have longevity and it would be worth retraining in (mid-40's).
He is thinking about maybe a driving instructor or a smart meter installer/engineer.
He wants to do something completely different than he was doing (manufacturing) so open to any ideas for careers that don't require university education and the job will have longevity. Any suggestions for areas he could look into?

I've had a small booklet through my letterbox this morning from the local college, hundreds of different subjects on offer ranging from a short making cupcakes, to full degrees both academic & non-academic, fulltime & parttime. Maybe see what's on offer in your area.Liverpool is one of the wonders of Britain,
What it may grow to in time, I know not what.

I work in further education so know about all the random courses but in a specific sector so don't know about trends in other sectors. Thanks for the input and I'll take a prospectus home for him to have a look at.If you always do what you have always done, you will always get what you always got!0

Maybe make the most of his manufacturing background rather than write it off, 3D printing has some interesting opportunities.0

It may well depend on the area where you live so worth looking at vacancies locally and talking to your colleagues in other areas of your college.0
