National rail sending me to court

So around earlier today, as a 20-year-old university student, I purchased a return ticket while on the train to my destination. Little did I know there was an issue with my ticket which I discovered when the attendant checked my ticket on the return journey. I have been accidently issued a child ticket and I never asked for one and it's quite obvious I'm not a child so its clearly just a misclick of a button.
The attendant seemed super mad at me for some reason and blamed me that, its my duty to check all the details on the ticket ect.... and after being very rude to me, he finally said the only solution is to re-buy the whole ticket, to which I refused as I understandably said I'd be happy to pay the difference or to buy one single ticket to my destination (note I also didn't have enough cash with me to pay the whole fare ticket either, all I had on me was cash and my uni card) He seemed to find this amusing and began to bore me and attempt to force me to pay by describing all the legal action the company will take against me blah blah blah...... after arguing with me for a good 5 mins, it came to the point where, he told me to stop taking and timed 30 seconds until I agreed to pay the full amounted ticket, like I was some sort of animal. I just ignored him, and he asked for my details so he could submit a report, to which I refused to talk to him. He then calls the police and at my destination I'm greeted by 2 police officers who wanted the story, and to make things short they said he had the legal right to ask for my details so I eventually gave it to him and took a statement from me, and said he'd file the report and will get a letter in a few days.
So what can I expect from this letter ?
Do I have any rights to have done what I did, and would this be understandable if told to a company/court ? - I really dont want to go down this route so if anything can be done, what is that process ?
EDIT: Sorry, I mean East midlands trains

FYI.
It won't be 'national rail' or even 'network rail' that you hear from. You buy tickets from and travel with Train Operating Companies.
Therefore it might be relevant to tell us who you were travelling with, or even just the route ...:heartpuls Mrs Marleyboy :heartpuls

Did you purchase from ticket office if so their mistake? or did you purchase from ticket machine where you have the choice of inputting adult or child designation? If so your mistake? If purchased on train did the ticket examiner ask you your age? if not his mistake.
Regardless, my opinion is you should have paid as requested and discussed with train company later, to discuss. He had his job to do and you appeared to be rather childish LOL by your own words ignored him refused to talk etc.
Now its went further getting the police involved to get you to give the ticket inspector the required information which you should have done when requested.
You will probably receive a certain amount now to pay and hopefully that will be the end of the matter.
As a university student starting out in life you do not need any sort of record against you so hopefully all turns out well. The world is not ruined by the wickedness of the wicked, but by the weakness of the good. Napoleon0 -

I wasn't being childish, rather he was extremely rude and stubborn. Why should I continuously argue with someone who clearly isn't going to listen or understand the circumstances.
And, I told him I didn't have enough money to pay for the ticket (even if I wanted to) and said I would get a fine either way.0 -
Hi you do not have to argue, you have to calmly acknowledge the fact that you were issued with a wrong ticket from a conductor/ ticket examiner, not an attendant?
Therefore your ticket was not valid for your journey. You acknowledge this fact at the time give the correct details to the staff and the company will invoice you for correct amount, that should be end of.
You could get in touch with the TOC and explain your side and ask them to reconsider.
But as said to argue? it takes 2! and then ignore and refuse to speak is in my opinion rather childish. The world is not ruined by the wickedness of the wicked, but by the weakness of the good. Napoleon0 -
Many moons ago, I ended up on a train after missing my stop. Cue a narky ticket inspector talking to me like trash.
Issued the paperwork and demanded immediate payment. After some scrutiny I noted payment of the funeral did not need to be immediate. I told him I wouldn't pay and that I'd pay at my convenience. He did not like it, but it was printed on the notice he issued me. You may have been able to pay later, but now who knows.
The TOC could issue you a court summons, but I would hope of you're not a serial fare dodger, you'll get the fine. Usually 2x the single fare you should have paid..
You'll find out soon enough.0 -
Which route was it?
Were you not surprised at the low fare? As you had only limited cash with you, presumably you had some idea of what the fare would be.0 -

Yes, your right, I was given an incorrect ticket by conductor, so why am I expected to pay the full fair price.
I told the conductor, I'd be happy to pay the difference or buy another single from my current location to my destination - which is extremely reasonable.
"You acknowledge this fact at the time give the correct details to the staff and the company will invoice you for the correct amount, that should be end of."
That's what I wanted! but he wanted me to pay for the full ticket again instead of paying the difference! and I didn't have enough cash on me to pay for a full ticket again.
Once again, I ignored him because he was completely rude, and trash talking while I was completely calm the whole time. Why should I continue to speak to someone who is not acknowledging what I am saying, its a waste time and it was an appropriate thing to do, rather than me being rude back to him. Which would you rather ? Me, ignoring him or be a complete !!!! back to him causing more commotion on the train, you tell me?0
