Job Interview Presentation - Advice Please.

Options
My husband works in the railway industry in a fairly specialised job. He has an interview for a similar job in the same industry, he really wants the job as it offers the next step in terms of career progression. He has to give a presentation as well as have an individual interview, he will not get the subject or details until 4 days before the interview. He knows his area of work in great detail, but could anyone please give him some general guidance regarding the presentation as he is already feeling anxious about it. Thanks.

do a search of this board for presentations, I think you will find a few old threads.

My advice is always Remember the Deaf Old Lady at the Back. Which means don't shout, but speak clearly and slowly - he needs to practice beforehand however silly he feels - without gabbling.

    Best of luck to him.

  • Does he know whether he will be able to use a flip chart or overhead projector? This is a good way to prepare salient points and give the interviewers (and interviewee) something to concentrate on.

This takes some of the pressure off and may help him to relax. The big plus is that he knows his job well and that most interviewers will realise he will probably be nervous.

I agree with the previous post, do practice, if you have notes keep bullet points on small cards, better than lots of paper.

I wish him the best of luck
  • Take hand-outs for an extra 2 people to what is listed on the interview details, that way he is not caught short if anyone else appears.
Remember to speak clearly and project well.
Rehearse a 1000 times! lol. I recently did one for my new job and literally stomped around the dining room repeating it.
I found it really helpful to write out my presentation in full, rehearse it a few times then reduce it to short sentences, rehearse some more, drop down to bullet point and rehears more. Finally my notes sheet consisted of 8 words, these were my key points to keep me on track if I strayed off. Plus by the time he has gone through that process he will be pretty word perfect.
