Lands End, a might remote. Not quite sure if there is a village there. I`m in Devon now, well Plymouth, so not the rural bit. It is handy as it is a large, and at last, rapidly developing city. Handy for various coastal areas in both counties and also Dart Moor. Prices here are well below the UK house price average.

I`ve not looked much but pn is spot on when she says there are some "affordable" places in Cornwall. Again, for me, I don`t think it would suit me as a retired person.

    Cheers people.

I lived in the house we will return to, (mortgage free,) from 1991 to 2033 before emigrating. Yes, it's remote, but that's what we want. There is a village (Sennen, ) with two pubs a chippy, and a general store, all in walking distance, (to say nothing of its magnificent beach and serious cliffs.)

Four miles away is St Just, a thriving small town/village, with more stores, 4 pubs, and decent pasty shop, (Warrens.)

9 miles away is Penzance, with 2-3 superstores, and a rail connection to the rest of the world.

We hope, (if it's not to expensive,) to live a good few years at Land's End, enjoying the rugged beauty, the rural isolation, and the community spirit there. Not everybody's cuppa I know. But we're not doing this on 2 weeks holiday experience, as I said I've lived there for 12 years prior.

if you are living there rent/mortgage free and can walk everywhere, how expensive can a chippy be?

Food will be a lot cheaper than Aus, as will utilities.

Having lived in Lancashire, London and Suffolk and now on our second time living in the west of Cornwall, I don't find the cost of living here any more expensive than anywhere else in the UK.

Certainly water charges are more and if travelling out of the county regularly it can be more expensive, but if retired how much frequent travel would be involved.

Personally I would not wish to live anywhere else in the UK.
