p45 - incorrect tax figure

sorry if I've posted in the wrong section, new to this!
Basically my boyfriend worked for a carpentry firm up until the end of June when he became self employed. Since then we've had problems with them as he was seriously underpaid in June. His last 3 days in June were put into a July payslip and sent out with his p45. Because his earnings were so low for that month he had a tax rebate of £160 and paid £30 tax for the month. (I'm simplifying the figures here). So in April May and June he paid a total of around £600 tax, plus £30 in july and then take off a £160 rebate. We make this £470 tax for this financial year. However his p45 states that he only paid £30. We thought this was just a clerical error as it exactly matched July's payslip and called the company to ask for an amended p45. They simply told us they had it right and that was that. So then we called hmrc to amend it as we will need correct figures to submit now he's self employed but they said to contact the employer. Since the employer won't change it, what should we do?! We do have the payslips for this year to prove he's paid his tax but hmrc said they would just use the figure on the p45, which wasn't the answer I was hoping for when I'd been on hold 50 mins!

I am a bit confused by your post. I think that the best thing to do is to give the actual figures involved.
From the P45 part 1A the tax code/basis and all figures for pay and tax ie if there are two sets of figures give both if only one set confirm that the space for the second set is blank.
From each payslip for this tax year give the month number, tax code/basis, taxable gross, tax paid, NI paid, any other deductions, nat pay, taxable gross to date and tax paid to date.0 -
It's not the figures that are confusing us so much - we know hey don't add up to match the p45. We just don't know how to get the p45 changed - hmrc say the employer should do it but they're refusing to look into it as they're adamant they're right. We've told them we have the payslips and there has been more tax deducted than the p45 states but they won't amend it0

This doesn't make sense. From your op it sounds like he was paid monthly and you cannot have a tax rebate and pay tax in the same monthly payment
If you could confirm actual info it would help understand what has happened here - what was on each payslip for pay, tax, tax code, pay date and which pay date it refers to i.e. month 1, week 8 etc
You could also log into his personal tax account and look at the earnings information in there. On mine it shows the information that has been supplied by my employer each month so this might help you see where the problem is.0 -
I assume you are purely counting the tax on his payslip and not NI?0
