Help with Self Employment Registration Please?

Hi, last year I worked for a few months as a freelance writer, however I have not registered as self-employed until now.
I have registered for self assessments, however I have now stopped trading and am employed and in full time education.
I am wanting to know whether I can immediately submit a no longer self-employed/ceased trading form or whether I have to wait a certain amount of time because I have literally only registered as self employed today.
I did not earn enough to be taxed, but I know I have to pay the NI contributions before I can claim it back on the tax return (I have been self employed before, but ceased trading before starting again). Help anyone?
