Job pays on the last day of every month, and before midnite, unusual or normal?

hello all,

I have a friend who has started a new job. She has been informed by the employer, payday always falls on the last day of the month, nothing unusual about that i hear you say!!!

She was informed by the HR department, if pay day falls on a Saturday or a Sunday, then employees will be paid on these respectful days. I wanted to know if it is quite common for employers to pay there staff on the weekend??? do most pay on a Friday if the payday falls on the weekend??

She was also informed, on payday, her salary will be credited to her account anytime, up and til midnight on the day. Again, is it common to pay staff anytime on pay day?? Do most get there pay in their account after midnight the day before??

I am curious to know your thoughts/experiences

It should be last WORKING DAY of every month. Which is when my employer pays. Never known a employer pay on weekends.

I used to get paid on a select date and if it fell on a weekend it would be there on Monday morning at midnight. Otherwise it showed up anytime until 2am. I guess it depends how it's set up as if it's someone doing it manually it could take a lot longer than I think it's bacs

If it is a small employer they could well sit down on the last day of the month and FP each employee, a larger one who uses BACS payments could not do this, the system would not work that way.

The timing may simply reflect the fact that the employer doesn't control how quickly the bank makes payment.

In my company, the HR department input the payroll which has to then be authorised by a senior manager, it is normally set up a couple of days in advance so the specific timing of payments is down to the bank, not the employer, although I think normally they go out first thing.

The weekend thing is a little odd - in your friend's position, I would assume that what the person who spoke to her meant is that they don't pay early when the pay day falls on a weekend - so they may set up the payments to leave their account on a weekend but the bank may well not process the payment until Monday. If it is very important to her then I'd suggest that she clarify with her employer, if it were me, I'd assume that if the payment is due on a Saturday or Sunday it would be in my account by the end of the day on Monday, but not before, and would plan on that basis.

If they use BACS then I would expect the payment to go into her account on the Monday morning, if they send individual transfers to each employee then it would depend more on when they individual payments are input and sent by the employer, so it could be later in the day.

Pay from current job goes in after midnight on the Friday so when I get up for work it's in the bank.

As molerat says, this sounds like a small company making manual payments. Larger companies will almost invariably use the BACS Direct Credit system which would not work in the way you've decribed.

I have has several jobs where payday was 24th or 25th of the month if it fell on a weekend or a bank holiday Monday it was always paid on the Friday (unless Easter or Christmas occurred and then it would be paid on the last day work day before the holiday) It was always credited during the night.

My previous workplace paid on the 15th (or earlier if a Saturday Sunday) - if this fell on a Monday members of staff who banked with I '**Think** it was Barclays got their cash early as the company also banked with Barclays...

I suppose the point I'm trying to make is - getting paid on a Saturday or Sunday may be a little odd- but as long as she gets paid it shouldn't be an issue. They've told her when the pay dates and days are so it shouldn't be too much of a shock. I would personally only take issue if the payments didn't hit my account....
