Teaching English as an additional language?

Hi
I teach English language and understanding a little as part of my day job (I work in a primary school) and wondered if anyone did this on a part time basis teaching both adults and children privately and if so have you got any advice. I am toying with the idea of doing a course eg tefl - has anyone done this and is it worth the cost?
Many thanks
