Debt & Depression

Hi everyone,

I'm sorry if this is the wrong place for this post - if it is please feel free to move it.

Really, this is just a way to get things off my chest. I'm struggling with debt and with life in general. Myself and husband are trying to clear our debt and to do this properly we are living apart. I've always suffered with depression but it's gotten worse lately because of debt ruling my life and living apart from my husband.


I haven't gone into work today - me and my husband had an argument yesterday and it sent my already fragile state into a downward spiral. I feel like I can't cope :(

  • I just want to say firstly that looking at your signature, yo've done really well in paying down your debts so far. The end is in sight! As someone who has also struggled with depression, I know this is easier said than done, but try to focus on what you've achieved so far. In the end, it will be worth it.

    Now might be a good time to assess whether or not you're paying off too much too quickly as well, if you really feel like you're struggling, or whether or not there is an area of spending you can continue to cut back on. Are you on a DMP?

    Is there no way you and your husband can live together, or perhaps spend more quality time together?

    Are you on medication for your depression? It really does help sometimes. I also recommend exercise, even if it's just long walks, and if you know anyone with pets, try to spend more time at their place! Assuming you don't have pets already. Mine helped me through my depression. They gave me a reason to keep on living to be honest.

    Thank you for your reply and kind words. I try to focus on my achievement and I cope for a little while and then it becomes overwhelming.


    I've suggested to my husband that we spend more time together - I'm living with a friend and he is living with his parents. I sometimes stay at his but I don't sleep well there.
    He is not very proactive and takes him a while to get off his butt. Albeit, he is going on a lad's weekend away this weekend :rotfl:


    My in-law's dog is a God send to be honest. As soon as I'm with her, making a fuss of her, my depression sort of goes away! I'd give anything for a dog, always wanted one, but not in a position right now.

    I agree with the others that discussing the way you feel with your GP is a really good idea. There are also some specialist helplines called Rethink and Mind which deal with all aspects of mental health, so they could also be worth contacting for support.

    In terms of dealing with your debts I think it’s a good idea to contact one of the free debt advice charities to see whether there are any options to deal with your debts which you might not be aware of.

    Lots of great advice above, and as has already been said, you've done SO well with your progress to date, you should be incredibly proud of what you've already achieved.

    Learn to recognise the signs of you slipping into your own personal black hole, and also learn what the triggers can be for that - you may not always be able to counteract them but at least being forewarned can be helpful. Agree totally with the person who suggested taking yourself out for a walk too - that can really help. I also have a little challenge for you - every day you have to do one small thing for yourself - something purely for you. It can be as simple as painting your toenails, or going to bed early with a really great book - it absolutely doesn't have to cost any money, just needs to be something that you'll enjoy and must be done regardless whether you feel you "need" that boost, or not. :D
