Student Loan

Hi Everyone,

Back in September 2013, I was accepted on a full time uni course and student finance was in place. Due to a previous bursary I was then told I did not qualify for maintenance loan etc. I spoke to uni, who suggested that I move across to a part-time option and agreed to do this ...

April, 2014 - I ask to suspend course due to being made homeless with my 4 yo child. Uni informed that I will not be returning back due to financial hardship.

Fast forward to April, 2016 - I receive a repayment notice from a debt collection agency. This debt is being persued by the Uni, and I have received a final debt notice threatening court action etc. I never agreed or signed for the loan and nor was I invoiced with payment details during the period I was enrolled on the course.

I now see that University's may be unable to recover the debt as they did not follow CSA rules. My question is should I pay up? and do I have to show evidence of my bank account details to debt recovery agency?

Many Thanks in advance,

Ali x

  • So when you studied in the 14/15 academic year, when did the course start before you withdrew in April?
From what I could gather from your post you did not complete the 14/15 AY declaration which means the Tuition Fees that Student Loans would pay, would not be able to be paid out in which case the Tuition Fees would be your responsibility

Currently work for SFE, but by all means not an expert. Very general advice only.

Thanks so much for replying to my query.

I was not advised or told by student services that I would need to self-fund. When I have taken out student finance on another course and it was made very clear that you had to apply for a certain type of finance and the procedure to follow.
That never took place with the University. I accept you do have a responsibility but I feel that I was mis-lead, believing that student finance England had been informed of my change of status. As you correctly surmised I suspended the course in April due to financial hardship and then informed the Uni that I would not be returning in the August of that year.

I appreciate your comment, always good to have another perspective.

    KR,

Sorry about late reply - just saw it tonight x
