Wireless Card Problem

I am having trouble connecting an old Sony Laptop to the Internet using the wireless card. There is no problem connecting by ethernet.
It's a VGN-BX197 running Win7 SP1 and all updates since installed.
Device Manager shows the Intel Pro/Wireless 2200BG Network Connection has up to date drivers and that seems to be confirmed here https://downloadcenter.intel.com/product/3821/Intel-PRO-Wireless-2200BG-Network-Connection although it does not quote Win7 in the OS column.
The wireless light is on.
It has connected very briefly but then lost connection. Now when I try to connect I only get 'Windows was unable to connect.
This started a couple of weeks ago just before finding out that Windows had not updated since April 12 this year when a critical update was installed. I have done a system restore to that date and now have all updates but the wireless problem still remains.

Thanks Hans 2!
(or should that be "Vielen danke?)
I have downloaded the PDF in that link, advise everyone else to do the same, worth saving.I think this job really needs
a much bigger hammer.

And did that solve the issue?
Your OP didn't mention anything about changing SSID.
I would have said your issue was more likely to be interference from neighbours WiFi or other devices running on the 2.4Ghz band.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

I am still no nearer solving this problem.
I checked the wifi channels and that does not appear to be a problem. My Talktalk router HG633 is using Channel 5 and nobody else was using that when I checked. Talktalk seem convinced my router will always find the best channel https://help2.talktalk.co.uk/guided-assist/how-do-i-change-my-wireless-channel/huawei-hg633-super-router/
There is a Sony program (VAIO update) on the Laptop that in most cases automatically updates the software for pre-installed hardware and software which might solve the problem.
Under the Manual Updates section there are two programs but they will not install because it says I am using the wrong OS.
They are Wireless LAN Starter 1.0.03.0270
and Intel Wireless LAN Driver 10.5.1.59a
I assume they are XP drivers and do not work on Win7. I have searched for the Win7 equivalents but without any success.
Does the fact that MS say in Device Manger that the wireless driver is up to date not negate the above?
Everything in Device Manager is clear except under Other Devices there is an' Unknown Device' with the yellow query button. It says the Location is on Intel 82801FBM LPC Interface Controller 2641 with Hardware ids ACPI\IFX0101 and IFX01010 -
Drastic solution possibly, but ... in Device Manager uninstall the WiFi card and accept the option to delete drivers. Shut down. Make sure Ethernet is connected and power up. Open up Device Manager and do a Scan for New Hardware ... assuming this finds the WiFi card then let it download the driver and install the card.
Maybe that will work?0 -

Thanks just tried it but it did not work!
No problem uninstalling and deleting the drivers but after shutting down and starting up it could not find any drivers so 'Network Controller No Driver Found' ended up in Other Devices. I definitely had the ethernet cable connected at the time
In the end I got a WiFi USB Mini Adaptor on ebay for a couple of quid.0
