Ex Exmployer made deductions from my wages yet did not pay tax or national insurance

I worked for a Cash Generator franchise whilst at University - awful job, horrendous treatment, but stuck it out for two years! I worked three days a week to begin with, and then increased my hours to full time for the last few months that I was there. During this time we would never get paid on the day we were supposed to (weekly, Tuesday, cheque that they wanted us to cash in store to make money back from us), or the amount we were supposed to. Sometimes we would be waiting days to be paid. Then we would get a very basic looking pay slip with the amount we had been paid and the deductions for tax and NI.
Long story short, since accessing my personal tax online I can see that I have no contributions for the years that I worked there. I always suspected that they perhaps weren't declaring their employees but I didn't know too much about it at the time.
Help??

HMRC? If they have deducted and not paid these, HMRC are the people to tell.0

I looked on their website and it seemed to insinuate that unless you had proof in the form of payslips - this was in 2012 and I don't have my pay slips any more - that there isn't anything you can do. What proof do I have that I worked there? They never gave me a p45/p60 when I left either.
It just doesn't seem fair that they should get away with it, we didn't get paid for the hours we worked as it was.
I remember asking to book holiday days and being told I only got 12! After going back and forth for a bit I said I was going to go to citizens advice and my boss went mental, now I know why. Oh to be young and naive again.0 -
Scoundrels.
I would still let HMRC know; they may want to conduct an audit if the company is still operating. You say you worked there between specific dates - that's pretty good starting point for them if no tax was given to them in that time.
More generally, good practice to keep paperwork, at least for 6 years to take you over statute of limitations should anything arise from past paperwork. Payslips don't take much space in a folder that can be sealed with a P45 on top when you end employment at any given place. We'd all like to be young and naive again, mind you!0 -
Thank you - we very rarely actually got pay slips and if we did they contained little to no information. Paid weekly and never on the same day. Really was awful there.
Would it still definitely show some contribution if I earned under the personal allowance for that year?
Thanks again0 -
Is that your full name and year of birth? You might want to change that just in case. Probably not a problem here but it might be if you post later on.
[STRIKE]Were you paid in cash or into a bank account - if the latter, you might still have/be able to get statements to show how much you were paid and calculate from there?[/STRIKE] Scratch that, I can read, honest. Not sure what to suggest - obviously you can write and ask for the information, but I doubt you'll get it. I'd just inform HMRC and leave if with them - if you can contact any of your old colleagues get them to do the same. Several reports might get them interested and it'll likely all come out of the woodwork then!0 -
I don't work there any more, or even live in the same city for that matter. Plus I'd quite like them to know they've been rumbled! I don't think anyone who worked with me still works there either - it really was a rubbish place to work. I'll ask around!0

If you didn't earn enough to hit the threshhold for paying National Insurance, and you didn't earn enough to pay tax, your personal tax record wouldn't show anything.Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
I thought the new personal tax account should include all employments no matter the size, which would allow you to pay in order to get a full year of NI comtirbutions.0

If you paid your cheques into your bank account it may be possible to get copies from your Bank as most scan these items. They would need to know specific dates and amounts so you would need to check your old statements first.0

However, there still may have been nothing to pass over to HMRC. And the OP said 'no contributions for the years that I worked there', which may be correct and we won't know unless the OP comes back and says how much s/he earned! (I could guess she from the username but who knows these days!)Signature removed for peace of mind0
