I was rummaging through the sewing box & riffled past the mushroom when a son asked "what's that for" - in the end he retreated to YouTube and emerged enlightened & unwillingly believing.
Darning socks is definitely on the wane. (To be fair to the child, since he & his brothers "go through" socks, I now only buy the inexpensive by-the-kilo sort which are not worth darning, but the mountain boot socks he did see were made of real wool & could (& should!) be repaired.
My lads think I'm odd for having been to the cinema (to see Star Wars) only after months of campaigning. My parents just had not had that option as children & did not see it as anything like essential until other parents expressed surprise we had not seen the film. (Hurrah for peer pressure plus pester power...) They have been to the cinema a couple of times but correctly realise the ticket cost is the same as the DVD and a little patience means the money can be redirected to other things they'd rather have.0 -
OP I think weird is a bit strong, but I would say it's a little unusual to never have takeaways.
We have them (probably too often) but it's usually a curry or Chinese as I don't cook these at home other than in their very basic form - ie. A simple stir fry or a curry made with a jar of sauce.
To make a really good curry like our curry house I would have to spend loads on the spices etc and it just wouldn't be worth it for the 3-4 times a year we have curry.
At the Chinese take away we all (5 of us) like completely different dishes so I would mean me making 10 different things for one sitting which I'm not prepared to do even if I did know how and had the ingredients!
Sometimes in a big family a take away is just more convenient. And most people do like a night off from cooking0 -
OP I don't have takeaways, either. I actively dislike them; not sure what it is, but somehow to me takeaway food never tastes "right". I think the last time I was subjected to it was about 10 years ago, when an acquaintance of DH's invited himself over without notice, and I told DH I had no spare food to feed the man, and in any case, as I dislike him and hadn't been consulted, I wasn't cooking!:D DH agreed with me; and when it became obvious that we weren't going to feed the chap, he decided he'd get takeaway for us all. (The purpose of his visit wasn't just a social call either, but that's another tale).
To be honest, by the time DH could have gone out to get a takeaway, waited an age in the takeaway shop, and come home with stuff that then needs zapping in the micro because it's started to go cold, I can easily rustle up something much tastier myself.
I don't do coffee shops either - I'd far sooner get the wretched shopping finished, and come home and have a decent cup of coffee in the comfort and privacy of my own home.If your dog thinks you're the best, don't seek a second opinion.;)0 -
OP we only have fish & chips about once a year, when we walk the Illuminations. We never have takeaways and generally don't bother with chain coffee shops, preferring to use a local small coffee shop. DH occasionally picks up a mocha on his drive to clients, and always has one at the airport when flying abroad.2021 Decluttering Awards: ⭐⭐🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇 2022 Decluttering Awards: 🥇

I'm always amazed to see the number of cars queued up outside McD
, or even people waiting at the chippy.
A few years ago i went to a 21st birthday party. Half way through the night, the lads Dad came around asking everyone what they wanted to eat. I hadn't noticed any food and said lets see what there is. And he said, we haven't got anything special in, i'm just making the list to go to McD. I was sure he was joking ...... But he wasn't. The first time and the last i'd eat there again.Liverpool is one of the wonders of Britain,

Ive never had a take-away coffee and have only ever been to Starbucks once, where we were not happy with weak coffee in a thick mug.
I've never had a Subway in the UK, but I like them when in the USA, as I can always get a vegetarian sandwich, crammed with salad. And not just horrible romaine lettuce, either.Member #14 of SKI-ers club
Words, words, they're all we have to go by!.
(Pity they are mangled by this autocorrect!)0 -
I admit the American subway are a work of art .When I was touring the U.S. with my friend a few years ago before they ever became popular over here we would have a foot long one for lunch between us, and boy it really was a foot long, and crammed with as much stuff as they could get in, and very nice .
The shop was spotless and the staff very helpful and friendly I have taken my DGS when I have had vouchers at times to the ones in England and never bought for myself as I just didn't fancy them, but the boys seem to enjoy them(especially if Granny's got a voucher )
I prefer my own coffee to the chain stuff, but twice a month at my U3A coffee morning held in the local Dobbies I will use up my freebie vouchers from my loyalty card, and their coffee isn't too bad (helps that its a freebie I guess.
On the odd occasion I go to Waitrose near Maidstone I also have the freebie coffee and newspaper whilst I'm shopping. My old mum's maxim is true 'Cheap is good but free is better':):)

My first bit of grown up sophistication and rebellion was a frothy coffe - yes in a glass cup, :rotfl: at he "Bocaccio" - the "Boc". The lads would sit around strumming guitars and I thought I was so cool, smoking disgusting French cigarettes and dressed head to toe in Mod Gear, looking like Cathy McGowan (the girl from Ready Steady Go).
My parents hated the place - they said it was full of "Beatniks".
So of course I never told them ....:rotfl:
Takeaways? Occasionally.0
