I wouldn't fancy steeping food in coke, never mind cooking it in it. It might just dissolve into nothing.

You do realise that you can use cheap coke to descale toilets?

My contribution to the "value meat" discussion is to avoid value minced beef (due to the high fat content) and go for standard minced pork. It's actually cheaper and only 10% fat. If I do need to "beef" it up, I add an extra stock cube.

And kettles ;):D:p Cola has phosphoric acid in it, which is what dissolves the limescale (calcium carbonate). I can't stand the stuff, and certainly wouldn't be cooking with it (insert "shudder" smilie ;) ).

Very. And a junior and senior grammar school education even more so. Ah, the joys of roasting third formers over an open fire ...

Learning that my surname was derived from the Old English word "leck", meaning stream, and signified "a dweller by a stream" - a very sensible thing to do in those times - helped, too.

Strangely, my nickname at school was my equally odd middle name, Creasey, but only because the form I went through school in had a surfeit of Stephens.

    PMSL at 'Creasey' :rotfl:

I suffered too, having a surname most associated with purveyers of sausages and ice-cream. Especially given that the sausage ads were rather easy for bullies to take off. Then one day I was being taunted with "do your family make sausages? Do your family make ice creams?" "Yes, and one day I'm going to inherit a fortune off them!" Problem solved, although 15 years later I am ever-so-slightly miffed that no long-lost great aunties have left me their food-processing fortune!

    Hi all,

We're on a tight budget at the moment and I grabbed some reduced to clear "value" mince at the supermarket (just went in for cat litter too  ). I've just cooked it off and have drained fully 8 fl oz of fat off and it still looks awful - full of what my hubby like to call "b'doings" - so it looks like the cats will be getting it.

Does anyone have any recommendations for good quality meat at decent prices? Most of the butchers round here are quite expensive but we have a good range of supermarkets (no Sainsburys and no Waitrose though.)

    Thanks

    Hi Magpye

I am looking to make savings so i buy the cheaper cuts of meat - pork hocks, lamb shanks, mince, bacon pieces, chicken thighs, turkey legs, oxtail, stewing steak.

My OH is fussy so rather than buy smart price chicken breasts - which are still pretty pricey - we buy store brand chicken thighs which are always cheaper per KG and taste just as good.

I try to go for good quality cheap cuts - i am yet to find the holy grail - a local butcher who i can buy direct from.

    Good luck

One of my favourites is diced turkey thigh. In Asda, it comes in quite large chunks - some can be cut a bit smaller - but it makes a great substitute for chicken when doing a curry/casserole/stir-fry thingy.

I never buy Value Minced Beef - I just don't think it's worth the hassle with so much fat draining off when it's browned. I don't buy Value Sausages either - would rather have the better ones but serve less of them (maybe two each as they're thick ones).
