Counter offer from my Boss

Recently I got a good counter offer from my IT company when I submitted by resignation. Now I know how to bargain with HR department to get a good hike.
I was working there for past 4 years and we only got the salary rise annually( the amount vary as per the total sales ). last month I got a much better offer from one of our competitor with 16% hike from current CTC and with hike period of 6 months. I passed the selection process and got the offer letter. last day I forwarded this letter to our HR department along with my resignation(We have 2 week notice period)
later I had a meeting with our HR head and boss and I believe that I convinced them very well that I am facing problems with current salary package( most of us are facing issues with the outdated). after a 3 hour long discussions they offer me a much better package and requested me to stay in current position. I still don't know why they offered me fair counter offer.:T

... and I take it that you're posting this on a 'Green & Ethical' forum in order to convey a warning that the pay increase was necessary in order to afford the huge increase in energy costs resulting from the introduction of smart-meters in Toronto ?? ...
