1950's Drainage pipes.!

Help.! can anyone on the boards help us identify the drainage pipes that are in our bungalow, the bungalow was built in 1959 and the soil pipe and stack pipe [which are the originals] are made from a strange material, they are 4" wide and are quite light in weight, not plastic, but are black, look like cast iron and have a black slightly raised type texture. We looked on the original plans and they are marked as S.G.S. 4" pipes. They go all the way underground to the main man hole.

Many thanks for any help.

Arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.!! I think your OH is right, we had just been googling pitch fibre before we saw your reply, well... as the bungalow is 50 years old and the pitched fibre lasts only 40 years.! I think we may have a problem.

  • Replacing the bits above ground is easy compared to the below ground pipework if that fails. I think there is/are a commercial pipe lining system(s) to repair the below ground pipework.
