SSP... Do I need to apply for it?

I'm currently off with depression. I've checked the gov website and see no means why I'm not entitled to SSP but remember when I had a week off last year I got paid £0 (and stupidly never followed it up). But now i'm off quite seriously I really need to chase it up. As I haven't enquired about it yet have I missed out?

Provided that you follow the correct procedures then your employer should either pay SSP automatically or advise you of the reason they are not paying on a form SSP1 which then tells you how to claim for ESA. There is a period of three days (called waiting days ) when no payment is due but once you have been off for more than this and heard nothing I would definitely query this with your employer. If they then advise you that it is not being paid you are entitled to a written explanation which if you dis-agree with can be referred to HMRC for them to make a decision on.

    This is great, thank you.
