Do Lenders require an Employers' Reference?

Hi All,

Have applied for a Nationwide mortgage with my partner: all documentation sent off and approved and valuation booked in for next Wednesday.

Just wondering what everyone's thoughts were regarding Employers references? I have 2 jobs: 1 I have been in for 18 months and another for 3 (nearly 4 months). My partner has been in her job for 7 months now.

Are Nationwide likely to request a reference? We sailed through the AIP and are completely clear credit-wise. Only reason I ask is because we both work in schools and trying to track the HR lady down during summer holidays could be an absolute nightmare!!

It depends on what you mean by "references". If you mean confirmation that information you have provided is correct, then please see this:

I am sure, if you try hard enough, you will be able to contact someone in the L.E.A. who can help, otherwise, you will just have to explain to your lender that schools shut down in the summer and you are unable to tell them when someone will be available to answer their queries. Surely you must have the head teacher's contact details, no?

Depending on the lender and how long you have been in employment, they may contact employer to check you are actually working there in the contract type/tyerm that you state in the application.

Nationwide only requests employer references for Agency/Temporary workers.

That is definite they will use payslips/bank statements and even a contract of employment as a last resort references were dropped on the back of MMR.

However they won't take secondary employment with less than 6 months service.

we applied and put my more recent (and higher paying job) as my primary employment and my other as secondary so should be fine. We've had it surveyed and all good - should hear back this week!
