where to start?

Options
I am 44 year old female and 5ft 4 and about 5 stone over weight.

Fitness level I would say is in the minus and zero Flexibility. Wake up with bad back just about everyday.

So where do I start with exercise. Any good websites/videos I could use.

Thanks in advance.

Yours

Calley

Don't watch videos. Walk! And keep walking - more and more energetically. Set a target and a daily calorie limit. Don't comfort eat, go for a comfort walk! Watch the weight fall off.
Make everything as simple as possible, but not simpler.

Trouble is, it's impossible for us to tell you activities to do. You have to find something you love doing. For some people that might be swimming, others might be walking, some might be squash.

Are you confident enough to try a class? If not I would start with a "yoga for beginners" on Youtube and see how you fare.

Diet wise, you need to take (accurate) stock of whats going in. Spend a day being honest with yourself and see what you're eating. See what you can cut out. For example, I always thought I ate quite healthily - when I assessed properly I noticed I was having a baguette of garlic bread every night with my meals. Something I had allowed to creep up on me, and not really notice.

    Good luck.

Any exercise is good exercise but the general rule is the more difficult the exercise the more calories you burn. My understanding is that 3500 calories is 1 pound on the scales. If you can manage to do 500 cals a day that's basically one pound a week, theoretically. But, to lose weight, it's much quicker/easier to cut the number of calories going in. If you can both cut calories and exercise too, that's the best way.

I am not interested in weight loss at the moment. I know what to eat etc and what exercise I prefer for that. Either walking or cycling. I am well aware of my issues with food. Its something to tackled. But it will take a while to sort it out.

I was asking about fitness and Flexibility and what is best for that. seems everyone has latched on to the weight issues. Which is not what I was asking about.

I mentioned about the weight so that nothing was going to be suggested that would put massive pressure on knees and ankles.

Until you posted this I would have gone down the same route as your first post could be read like that you asked for both. Some posts gave some useful answers.

If you have access to a pool that would be good. Easy on the joints, get the heart and lungs going and good for the back.

For flexibility - yoga. There are so many videos on the net. Maybe start with the ones on the NHS website?

To strengthen your inner core (tummy, back muscle area) try a plank challenge.

    All the best

My philosophy has been to walk more and eat less and so far it seems to be working :)

I am feeling much better within myself without doing anything extreme, the weight is coming off slowly and my stamina is building slowly as well, I also find that the pain in my knees has all but gone and possibly as a result of wearing a rucksack, my back seems to be more at ease than it has been for many a year.

My diet needs cleaning up. I have massive issues with food. And its not a healthy relationship. So something that will take some time to sort out.

I don't follow diets such as slimming world as to me calling treats syns no matter how you spell it just is not right. Would never touch any vlcd or slim fast as to much sugar and rubbish in them.

I do know what to eat. Plenty of veggies, some fruit. lean protein, fish and a bit of dairy and small amount of carbs. With the odd treat here and there. That is works for me.

Nice one, nuts here and there would be good too for essential fats.

    But yeah, spot on.

Will try and help with exercise a bit later. Battery low.

Cally I'm on the bike :)

I've tendonitis in my feet and shoulders so I find cycling is the lesser of all evils.

I'm totally unfit, drink like a fish and thankfully just quit smoking yesterday

I live in NI which is famed for its hills, and living in the glens, there's plenty of them

I've a bog standard halfords bike, and I've no clue about gears

However I try to go out for at least two miles an evening, mostly 5 miles. I do get off the bike still at really steep hills but I'm getting slowly better

Done a ten mile cycle the other day, five miles of it up the sides of cliffs. Took a while getting to the top but I didn't stop, even if I was last one there

I find my knees and ankles don't suffer as much cycling as they do walking I will go swimming as well once I build my stamina up. I'm not a confident swimmer and tend to panic as I tire

I don't worry so much about my weight, I stopped dieting years ago. I eat healthy home cooked meals every day, using full fat everything. Lack of mobility is what's keeping me plump as I seriously do not over eat ( ok so the red wine don't help but hey ho no one is perfect)
