to be fair it doesn't matter whether you buy this or get a free piece of software anyway. 90% of computer problems lie between the chair and the keyboard.0

What a well balanced comment to start off your post with!
I use AVG and did so primarily because my Norton (which I'd been previously happy with) had expired and wasn't prepared to pay big bucks to renew.
It was only then that I noticed the difference..not only in speed but in how many previously undetected viruses it found.
Just because something is produced by a huge conglomorate, that doesn't automatically entitle it to being a world leader, it just means it has the resources to tell the public that this is how it should be viewed.
I for one, will keep an open mind when reading posts on this board, because it is primarily a money saving site. People don't want to knock companies here but save you money. And any poster just wanting to slag off others for having a difference of opinion should go elsewhere.Tried and Tested0 -
I didn't intend to slag anyone off, and I'm not sure I did. And really this probably isn't the place for a discussion over the merits of a product. Fact remains though that Norton is a conglomerate because it's products have made it one, and it is not the "bad" product which some would have us believe.
As others have stated, and in my opinion, this is a bargain.0 -
but it is a bad product, it's just well promoted. promotion and advertisement can get you anywhere, regardless of how good you are compared to the competition (eg. Windows, iPod, Playstation). I'm not saying that those are bad products, they're just the most popular of their sort when there are clearly better alternatives.0

I'm not quite sure what the "clearly better alternatives" are. I've tried McAfee and eventually deinstalled it and put in Systemworks because I found McAfee irritating. And I have personal doubts about the quality of a free virus checker, compared to one that you pay for.You don't get medals for sitting in the trenches.0

I think this thread is going a little off the topic of the bargain and more into a discussion on the relative merits of certain AV products - it might need to be moved to the Techie board soon0

I must say i'm a software developer and I have used Norton Antivirus, Norton Firewall, Zone Alarm and McAfee.
Out of all of the ones I have used Norton is the best by far.
In our office we call McAfee Mcrapee, an example as to why we dislike it is I installed Nortons on a friends pc all was fine no virus's, no trojan horses nothing. But for some reason she decided to uninstall it and install Mcrapee. A few months down the line her pc starts running very slowly. I do a system check using Spybot and it finds over 460 different spyware, adware and virus's.
I also have tried Zone Alarm before I purchased Norton as I was trying to save moneybut I found it wasn't blocking all trojan horses, it just wasn't doing anything. Don't get me wrong it is very good software especially for free but it wasn't up to the standard of Nortons. I would definetly download Zone Alarm if I had the choice between that and Mcrapee.
My pc which is running Norton Internet sercurity has zero infections.
So in my opinion and my colleagues opinions Nortons is very good at blocking/detecting unwanted virus's etc.
Btw if you want some very good software to detected unwanted spyware/adware/virus's I recommend downloading: http://www.spybot.info/en/download/index.html
Its excellent for deleting the unwanted programsBe ALERT - The world needs more LERTS0 -
As Norton seem to be the only AV which can deal with the latest virus I have picked up this is a great deal for me & timed exactly right, have placed my order & hope the deliver fast!!Post Natal Depression is the worst part of giving birth:p
In England we have Mothering Sunday & Father Christmas, Mothers day & Santa Clause are American merchandising tricks:mad: Demonstrate pride in your heirtage by getting it right please people!0 -
And I have personal doubts about the quality of a free virus checker, compared to one that you pay for.Btw if you want some very good software to detected unwanted spyware/adware/virus's I recommend downloading: http://www.spybot.info/en/download/index.html
Spywareblaster is also another great piece of free software worth downloading for preventing spyware/adware/dialers/browser hijackers etc. from being installed in the first place:
http://www.download.com/SpywareBlaster/3000-8022_4-10396039.html?tag=lst-0-1
Spybot, Ad-Aware and Spywareblaster are all essential, great products regardless of the fact that they are free. I'd also recommend PestPatrol: http://www.excid.com/futurenet/download/
I have all these products installed and have no conflict issues, although there has been known to be conflicts when using Norton in conjunction with other software products, so if you have Norton installed it might not be a good idea to install these products all at once.
It should be remembered that no antivirus product is 100% efficient at detecting/removing viruses, so it's always worth doing a free online scan using at least 1 or maybe 2 other antivirus products once a week:
Trend Micro Housecall http://housecall.trendmicro.com/housecall/start_corp.asp is one, and another is Panda ActiveScan http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan/com/activescan_principal.htm
Worth doing both once a week if you can.
It's also worth considering installing Mozilla Firefox as a default web browser instead of Internet Explorer, as Firefox is known to be better at preventing spyware from being installed than IE; downloadable from here: http://www.mozilla.org/
I've got both Firefox and IE installed and always use Firefox unless I can't get a page to display properly, in which case I'll switch over to IE briefly.
Sorry to go off topic here redfox; this'll be my last post on this thread.0
