You are best running Firefox (http://www.mozilla.org) than Internet explorer and Thunderbird (http://www.mozilla.org) rather than outlook express and 10+ programs to stop spyware, popups, adverts, malware, viruses etc.
For virus scanning check out antivir: http://www.free-av.com/0 -
Some good stuff on there. I'd like to recommend AVG also: http://www.download.com/AVG-Anti-Virus-Free-Edition/3000-2239_4-10342876.html?tag=lst-0-1 - definitely among the best and certainly the most popular free antivirus program available, and regarded by many as being as good as if not better than some of its non-free rivals e.g. Norton.
In addition to the TrendMicro free online virus scan mentioned on the page, it's also worth periodically (perhaps once a week) doing a free online Panda Activescan - available via this page: http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan/com/activescan_principal.htm
I've bought the full Panda internet security suite and can confirm that its antivirus program is one of the best on the market, so the free online scan is definitely worth doing.
On a related note if anyone's looking for free firewall software then ZoneAlarm available from here: http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/home.jsp is a very good choice. The other most popular free firewall is Sygate: http://smb.sygate.com/products/spf_standard.htm
Just remember that some of these free programs in many cases are as good as if not better than the ones you have to pay for.
EDIT: The AntVir mentioned in the post above looks impressive and reading the description can detect more viruses than AVG I think0 -
