David Lloyd now £108

I just signed up to David Lloyd in Beckenham and its at £108 per month.

Is this normal?

Why the hell are corporate rates higher than individual rates? They don't display pricing on their website nor anywhere listed. Should they be more transparent about gym membership pricing either in the gym when you get there or on their websites?

Wooah! My Fitness First membership is £34/month and my Gym Group £13/month. The facilities must be wonderful to justify that £108/month price!
  • They have an indoor pool, outdoor heated pool, tennis courts, gym, restaurant, free parking, football grounds, indoor badminton, massage treatment and spa, second indoor adult area pool, sauna, different sauna , steam room, ice pool, technogym cardio machines, bike machines with tv, trx etc.

But the membership... s anyone ele member at David lloyd?

So you've joined on a corporate rate without checking the individual rates available ??

Our corporate rate at a competitors centre about 5 miles away was under £80 for a family of 4 whereas public rate was £155 for the same

My mothers gym is £150 a month, one gym I left over a year ago now (so prices will have risen still) had a top tier price of £200 a month! But this is London and I also know of a few other gyms whose fees are £350 and £500 and a gym "celebrities" go to which was £1500 a month. Without the joining fee which was around £300. Yup, in London things are kinda higher than the rest of the country!

Our nearest DL is £99 for full personal membership, £75 is their cheapest. Kids are £24 I think.

I use an alternative gym with more facilities and better opening hours for £37 per month, it also has proper towels in the changing rooms and you don't need £1 for your locker.

I considered joining DL at Beckenham. They were very reluctant to tell me their rates and tried to insist I go first for a tour of the facilities. It took considerable effort before they told me that an off peak senior would be £82 a month. I decided that I was none too bothered about the frills and that Beckenham spa was a better bet.
  • Transparency is the issue... at David Lloyds there is none. I recently tried to join the one in Leeds, did their trial period I think it was £30 for 7 days... I like a swim and a steam not interested in anything else but immediately thought, yes I'll do this. How much are we talking about ? I asked, Oh you'll have to make an appointment with the sales team and come in to discuss it. !!!!!!. What is there to discuss, they are selling a bag of chips.. I don't want a fish . The only thing left to discuss is how much and where do I sign. Oh its not as easy at that Sir..... after asking the question five times I gave up and went to The Village. I've since discovered I have a client who pays £60 per month and one that pays £240..... There advertising strap line should be "Come for a ride at David Lloyds" The Village BTW cost £580 in advance for 6 months for myself and the significant other.. a tenner a week each and its perfect.

I think many gyms aren't so upfront about pricing. For example, I used to pay my year's fees up front with F/F. Most recently they tried to up the price from £380 to £480 which I couldn't see was justifiable and the monthly fees had not increased in that manner. I ended up 'leaving' and rejoining as a new member on a new member special deal. A few months later, they contacted me on my email as someone who had left the gym and offered me a 'special offer that they had never done before' to entice me back, yet it was the exaxct offer I was already on. So it's all a bit of a whitewash. The other thing is it depends how much of the facilities you'd use, I know many people appreciate the sauna / steamroom etc - I'm more a rush in, jump on the cardio equipment and rush out again person.
It is my understanding of the sector that there is a divide opening up and gyms are either going the budget route a la Gym Group or Pure Gym where it's just the gym equipment, or the luxury route with all the extras like the pools/tennis etc and apparently providers in the middle are losing a lot of customers.
