I was having a lovely night's sleep - for the first time in years, I drifted off within a few minutes.

OH woke me up at about 5am (after about 4 and a bit hours), saying 'the cats are being weird'. Tempted to grumble 'when have they ever been anything else?', but thought I'd probably better humour him, so stumbled downstairs to see the Idiot Cat posturing and wowling at Fluffyknickers like he would an intruder.

OH said that he thought Fluffyknickers was ill, because he went to pick her up and she wriggled and growled at him. She looked fine, if a bit freaked out by Idiot Cat, so I decided to remove him for being a wally. (the cat, not OH, although I was thinking similar about him for waking me up).

He growled at me and tried to escape. Proper angry, big eyed, flattened eared 'GET OFF AND LEAVE ME ALONE!' attitude from him. This is a cat that could be picked up by his whiskers and would just purr and show his belly for fusses. He's never done anything more grumpy than sulk on the windowsill when I retrieved a sparrow from his mouth.

So I put him on my lap and he continued growling - there was blood over my hands and arms.

One saline clean and a lot of cat moaning later, he's got a triangular puncture wound on his throat that looks quite deep and he swore when I tried to check out the base of his tail. He's now sleeping peacefully in the cat carrier (didn't protest in the slightest, which is more like him) by the door whilst we wait for the vet round the corner to open, as I reckon he'll need antibiotics at the very least (plus worming) and for them to check the rest of him for any more wounds.

My theory is that, on one of his expeditions into the back garden between my going to bed when he was still the usual purring and cuddling fool, and about 4am when the OH last noticed him as he worked downstairs, the utter twit has been beaten up by a mouse.

Of course, we shall say he fought a valiant battle with a rat the size of a Jack Russell. Just to ensure Idiot Cat's dignity, you understand. And I'm going to get stick from Work as it is - the last thing I need them to know is that he lost against his biologically appropriate food source, which probably weighs less than something he'd leave in the litter tray.

Anyhow - there is a vague point to this (other than grumbling about the lack of sleep - and OH just dozing off on the sofa now we're due to be leaving for the vet's); it was the different behaviour that led to finding this out, so, if anybody is unsure and can only say 'well, it's not like him to be friendly/affectionate/grumpy/angry/having a go at the other cat', trust your instincts. If it's just not the cat you expect, there's likely to be a reason for it.

Just as well the Muppet's insured. (That's point 2, as he has been insured since 7 weeks, but never needed anything in the last five years).

Anyhow, back later. [goes to kick OH up the backside as he's needed to carry the Idiot Cat]

    Lol Jojo
Hopefully idiot cat won't be too badly damaged
Don't take the mick too much mouse and rat bites are nasty and they can be very quick.
  • Idiot Cat is back from the vet. No other wounds apparent, had the very polite 'did you realise he had fleas?' (Answer, also very polite 'Yes, he was treated for them three days ago'), a 'You've cleaned him up nicely' and, the ouch moment of 'He's got a temperature - are you sure he hasn't been injured for a two or three days?'.

So, not only did he get Amoxi/Clav tablets for the week, he also received an injection of it and one of Meloxicam - he didn't react one bit to the needles and just sat on the counter (and on the scales previously) and she gave him a quick fuss on the top of his head, saying 'he's very good, isn't he?'.

Took him home, he decided to sleep in the carrier, the other cat (probably slightly disappointed she didn't become an Only Child) went back to sleep after a quick 'Oh. You're back. Yay.' and OH went to get some sleep.

I went to work, where I got a surprising amount of sympathy. Including an offer to bring a lurcher round to sort out any rats I might find in the area.

Stumbled home after work to find Idiot Cat happy and chirping downstairs, but, as I crashed out on the bed making confused warbles about work, having switched the fan on, he crept onto the bed (he usually launches himself onto the people in it), and he flopped out beside OH and spent the next hour gently clawing OH's armpit and purring.

Got to bathe the wound in saline for the next week (I didn't expect it to be stitched or glued because of the risk of abscesses anyway, so was planning to clean it daily anyhow) and he's got an appointment in a fortnight to check that the temperature's gone, with instructions to bring him straight back if he gets stroppy again.

Nowhere near as dramatic as Dave's Robocat storyline, but it's drama for us.

Sorry, have to "lol" - I love threads written in that style. I spent about 4 hours the other day reading two old threads that were like that and went on into long sagas over a couple of months of story telling. I was in stitches!

I can imagine you in the garden calling "come on fluffyknickers time for bed!!"

Anyway, I'm so pleased Idiot Cat is ok & you are so right - trust your instincts. Animals have a unique way of telling us something is wrong.

OMG that's still drama, I know how you feel about dragging yourself to bed after, this past week husband has been cat sitting Bill our friends cat (who owns the whole street and has so many names depending on which house he comes out of - although I do love someone has named him Gary)

So whilst husband has been languishing at Bill's

I've been left with getting up feed all the animals and attend to Dave and his breakfast, and litter tray, protest from Dave that he wants out of his prison now

By then time 2pm comes and i finish work i am ready for bed.

Tell Idiot cat that anymore nonsense he will have the thermometer up the bum.

That's nothing- when I lived in Kent I had a victorian mid terraced house with three floors. My cat worked out that if he charged the door to the top floor leading to the lodgers bedroom, he could hop out of the window, onto the very narrow ledge & from there onto the roof!!!!

I often had people knocking to say "Did you know your cat is on the roof three stories up?"

I couldn't get him down & he always came back in safely. This went on for quite a while until we got a lock fitted. That cat was a typical tom cat big bruiser & I'm amazed he lived to 19!

  • Idiot Cat took 35 minutes to take his tablet hidden in food yesterday, so the OH told me. His next one (administered by me) took 30 seconds and involved me finding out he may be an idiot, but he's naturally gifted at spitting it out the ides of his mouth, so it took three goes.

Today, OH took 5 minutes to handfeed it to him coated in cat food.

This evening's one (in a ball of pate, as I went and got some after OH ignored my saying we needed it) - about 0.5 seconds. He really is a quite agreeable animal at times, even when Fluffyknickers insisted on having a blob of her own without a tablet, he didn't try and steal hers.

He's pretty much slept for all but two hours since he got back from the vet, as compared to his usual spritely self of being asleep for all but three hours, keeping as close to the fan in the bedroom as possible - OH didn't complain once about him being in here, either.

But Idiot Cat seems happy and more like his stupid self. So just as well OH risked waking me up.
