Gothic Stirling, do you happen to know how long they give you as a deadline for sending in the paperwork for your ID etc, reason I'm asking is that I have sent off my driving licence for renewal yesterday and it should come back in the next 10 days, I haven't actually got the paperwork yet I'm hoping it will arrive next week sometime.

Hi kerryr1987 - there won't be a deadline as such but it will slow down the checks - usually you will have a list of accepted ID so look for what else you might have that would be acceptable.

I don't think that will be a problem as you will have to make an appointment to speak to HR to get ID checks and DBS paperwork done. Just explain the situation when you call. Do you have a Passport instead. Otherwise its 5 items such as Council Tax Bill, HMRC letter, phone bill (not a mobile one) bank statements, and a signed photo from a sponsor (just like applying for a provisional driving license).

I was also advised to prompt your referees, as this can be one of the reasons for delayed start dates.

I will thank you, I do have other forms of ID as well hrmc letters, birth certificate and bank statements but hopefully my license will be back in time.

I have also sorted out my referees and they are aware of the new job and that the NHS will be contacting them so hopefully they should respond pretty quickly.
  • Hi Kerry congratulations on your job offer :)

I have a few questions as other forums do state that people have had to wait a while for a start date.

    1. How long does it take for them to send me the letter by email outlining the next steps?, the conditional offer of employment? It took about 1 week for me to receive a confirmation email the first job I had in the NHS, and about 3-4 days for my current job.

    2. My previous employer who I worked for 2 years is happy to provide a reference but the employer before that which I stayed with for 2 and a half years has gone bankrupt and so the business is no longer in existence and I wouldn't know how to contact the director, would a character reference be ok as I think I need 2 references? As someone mentioned before, you need to cover the previous 5 years' worth of employment with the references you submit. If you can't, they will probably ask you to explain this, and then I would imagine they will ask you to supply a character reference instead if they need.

    3. I will need to have a DBS check which is fine and I have never been i trouble, how long will it take for this to come back?, I believe it is a standard check. Standard checks are quicker to come back than Enhanced checks as they involve fewer searches. However, the critical thing with DBS checks is the number of police force localities you have lived in. When you complete the form, you must record all addresses you have lived at and the local police force for that address will need to do a check. You can imagine the complexity when someone has moved around the UK many times and so will need to be checked by many different police forces! In particular, I know that the Metropolitan police have an alert at the moment that their DBS checks are v.delayed (around 12 weeks I believe!).

Hope this helps. Best of luck with your new position.
  • Hi

I also worked for the NHS and still do. I can tell you that it took overall for me around 2 months from the verbal offer to actually starting. The DBS came through really quickly, you will receive an email within the week l with several forms you will need to complete, one of these will be a DBS, health questionaire and some others which I cant remember. I will say that due to my 2nd referee taking their time supplying a reference the job offer was close to being withdrawn. You will need to find another referee, and I think this needs to be a previous employer. Good luck and i hope it all works out for you.

    UPDATE:

So today, I received my conditional job offer letter and was asked to fill out a DBS check form (which I have done) and also make an appointment for ID checks which has been arranged for 27th July.

Do I need to supply references at this ID appointment so they can send off for this?

Also, what happens at the occupational health appointment?, they have asked me to provide proof of my vaccinations to date which I have asked my GP to print off for me, why can the NHS not view my medical records to see which vaccinations I have had, why do I need to physically provide proof? do they need to comply with data protection even when employing someone?

Do I fill out the medical questionnaire at my appointment?

Yes you need to get them yourself and they do need to comply with data protection.

Did you not put the details of references on your application they will contact them themselves if you did.

Occu health will check you ha e your jabs needed and give you them if you need them but that depends on your role and the trust policy
