Finding a NI number for girlfriend's mum.

Hello,

Apologies if I've posted in the wrong area.

I am helping my girlfriend with her application to become a court appointed deputy for her mum (who has advanced dementia). We have completed the necessary paperwork and sent this to the Court of Protection (COP). The information required with regards to assets/finances/pension etc. was quite specific, and unfortunately my girlfriend's parents have not retained much in the way of paperwork regarding their finances. We answered what we could, and provided cover notes explaining the situation (the forms don’t really allow for ‘Not known’ and in most cases figures have to be entered).

The Court has since provided us with authorisation/certification to further investigate the assets/finances of my girlfriend’s mum.

One of the questions asks what my GF's mum's National Insurance Number is. Is there anyway to search for this? I've had a look online, and there's a page/form on the GOV.UK website - 'Don't know your National Insurance number: apply by post'. However, the form (CA5403) looks like it should be personally completed. I'm not sure if completing this on behalf of my GF's mum (and attaching the Court's interim order) would be accepted, plus we don't want to waste the certificates as we need these for other enquiries.

The Court cannot progress the case until we have investigated and reported back on this (and other other findings).

Any help, guidance or suggestions that you can provide ref. how to obtain this without paperwork would be most appreciated.

Thank you for your time.

Does her mother get any benefits or state pension ? any letter from DWP will probably show it.

It usually shows on the bank statements every time a benefit e.g. pension payment/attendance allowance payment hits the account.
  • Hello,

Thank you both for your replies. For some reason there has been next to no post received and very little paperwork was ever retained. We did find 1 fairly recent bank statement with a ZL20
no. on it, which appears to be linked to a pension type credit/payment. We did suspect that this was the NI number (we just can't confirm it due to Data Protection).

However, we do know that my GF's mum has banked at the local branch for a long time. I'm wondering if this branch would be willing to confirm the NI number, if we produce the Interim Order from the Court?

That certainly sounds like it's the NINo.

    Is the format AB123456C?

If it us, I'd just quote that.

Yes I agree ... if it is in the format jfdi suggests, that'll be it 100% so in your gf's mum's case, ZL20xxxx followed by one more single letter ... as long as the bank account is hers alone.

If the account is joint then look out for both parents NI numbers appearing on separate transactions.

That would require a bit more work to work out whose is whose.

I manage my elderly mother's accounts and all her state pension and pension credit payments coming into her current account start with her NI number in the description which should look something like this.

    TN123456B DWP SP

    or

    TN123456B DWP PC

    TN123456B DWP SP

    or

    TN123456B DWP PC
    Yes

DWP is obviously Department of Work and Pensions
    SP is State Pension
    PC is Pension Credit
AA would be Attendance Allowance I think etc...all with NINo as the first part of the Transaction description.

Repeating and confirming. If you can find a bank statement with a payment from DWP it will have the NINo as the start of the reference , then DWP and then a code describing the payment - I've seen SP for State Pension, AA for Attendance Allowance and I think WF for Winter Fuel.

  • Hello,

Thank you all for you replies, I never expected such quick and informative responses, but it's much appreciated.

The number on the 1 bank statement we have, does tally with the format, along with credits from DWP (SP).

    Thanks again for your replies.
