Remortgage with bad credit

Hi,
I'm looking for some advice regarding remortgaging my house.
Basically I bought my house in 2009 when I was single but now I'm married , just had a baby and we are looking to buy a house together . There is equity in this house and we want to keep it on under a buy to let mortgage and rent it out . However before I met my husband I stupidly got out a loan for a then boyfriend who when we split up said he was paying for it but didn't! I found out he wasn't paying when debt collection letters arrived at my door! I paid the debt off but obviously now have a default notice on my credit report that will stay on until Aug 2019. My credit score on average is 548 or 2 out of 5. Over the past 4 years my wage has increased, I have no debt and under my married name my credit is excellent! Just this stupid default dragging me down. My husband has excellent credit rating and I don't want to drag him down.
Please help... what is the best way to build up my credit? And will i be able to remortgage? Should I do it with the same company as I have a good track record with them?
Thanks in advance ( sorry for the essay!)

Im not an expert, this is just my experience.

We were accepted for a mortgage in December last year and my partner had a default in 2011, that was settled in 2013.
My credit history is excellent so I think that helped

We were not renting out a place though, I sold my flat
