  • This is my first post here, but an appropriate one I hope!

I think that the magazive is well worth getting a copy of, though I could be a little biased ;) The B&SS magazine is the least politcal and kit driven of the type so it's more my sort of thing I guess

Some of the editing staff have changed recently, so I'm sure that the typos will dry up soon. IN anycase, it's most likely to be the fault of us numpty writers! Sorry.
  • Thanks for the tip!

It's a good magazine, with nice glossy pics, but, I do get really frustrated with all the typos and spelling mistakes on what seems like every other page! There are two other bushcraft magazines - all three started out around the same time, and are all a bit different, so I just wanted to post this so that folks had a wider view of what's available..

I subscribe to the magazine listed in this offer, and both of the magazines/ newsletters mentioned by brunn. Being an English Teacher and Head of English, I have just looked through the latest issues of all 3 magazines. Are you sure that it is the magazine in this offer that has the errors? I can see only one, but quite a few in the other two that you mention...

As you have raised the three magazines that are available, here is my synopsis of each:

The magazine in this offer is 84 pages, A4, glossy - what you would expect a magazine to be! Packed with a variety of great articles and also family activities - which we utilise in our lessons at school. They state 'Expert Writers' and it is obviously written by people who know what they are talking about, and, indeed, well known figures in the bushcraft community. The magazine comes out every other month and is posted out looking like a magazine - not in a handwritten envelope.

The one from bushcraft uk started as a forum newsletter, and in my opinion still is. Published quarterly, the print quality is poor and I find that being A5 limits the size of the photos and diagrams, limiting their usability. The latest issue has increased considerably to 68 A5 pages. There is no content for the family or younger bushcrafter, occasionally there is a good article but the 'magazine' lacks variety and professionalism. Most of the writers seem to be 'regular' bushcrafters who enjoy sharing their knowledge. It made me smile when I read their article on wild plants - 'Twelve Plants for Twelve Months' which starts with 'I am certainly not a plant expert...' The article then goes on to encourage you to eat some of the plants listed.

The final magazine, 'The Bushcraft Magazine' was a disappointment when it first arrived, and, has remained such (all 28 pages) Coming out quarterly, again there is the odd article worth reading (if you add to it yourself) but the print quality is appauling, the photos are very amature, the magazine is flimsy and personally I don't go for all of that 'spiritual stuff'.

Well, that's an evaluation based upon the opinions of me, and some of my bushcraft friends - make your own mind up!

PS. I'll let you do the sums to assess 'value for money' - size, No. of pages, frequency etc. Not to mention the quality of the content - I know which one I will continue to subscribe to! :rotfl:
  • Thanks for that! I like bushcraft. Me and the OH did a bushcraft/survival weekend in the brecon beacons with the UK Survival School a couple of years ago and really enjoyed it!

...Now I've not read the magazine myself, but I'm told its full of tips on Tracking, Knives & Foraging, Flint Knapping, Fire Lighting, Wood Lore and Surviving In The Wild.

In an absolute emergency you can of course use the magazine to help get a fire started!!!!!!!:rotfl: :rotfl:

    Hi Dai,

Well, I am just doing my marking, 10 out of 10 for you... I was hoping that brunn would pick up on those - a little test... I even put them in the same sentence!

Appalling and Amateur - these are two of the most commonly mis-spelt words.

    :D & a ;)
  • Hello Guys
Although I will probably be listed as a newbie, I have been a subscriber to MSE for over a year, but never thought or felt the urge to register to have my say as it were.
But, Bushcraft & Survival magazine. I have been doing bushcraft since Ray Mears was a lad, before it was known as Bushcraft and i have to say that this magazine is a fantastic contribution to the subject.
Yes we have all seen Ray going about his duty but how much can you learn from watching his DVD's or reading his books. you have to have a good, accurate source of information and know where to get more info from when required. Bushcraft & Survival Magazine does what it says on the tin. it provides excellent info, accurate and informative without costing the earth.(money & environment). until this magazine was launched very few people knew of any other name or company other than Ray and Woodlore, we now have an informed choice we can "shop around" and check prices and companies before we buy, therefore saving money, is that not the whole purpose of this site.

i have been a subscriber to Bushcraft & Survival Magazine since issue 4, in my humble opinion it is simply the best value for money product of its type on the market. I have seen the others and I chose Bushcraft & Survival Magazine over all else.

    Thank you.
  • I have pretty much lost my husband to the Bivvy brigade so I've ordered him a copy, at least it may save his life when them bears come for him in the Yorkshire Woodland! Do they need any more encouragement?????
  • Thank you ! this will be great , I do alot of survival training I think it will always be useful later in life.
