Not the best Credit and Mortgages...

Hi,

Myself and my partner are trying to buy our first house, we have found a property for 115k and have an income of 18.5k for me and 16k for her. I have a loan of 4.5k which is £178 per month with 30 months left.

She has PERFECT credit, the problem is - 4 years ago i defaulted on a catalogue account i didnt even know i had until Jan 07 when i received my first letter about it so i paid it off in full.

Our mortgage advisor applied for an agreement in principle with Birmingham Midshire but they would only let us have 91k because of my credit.

What shall we do now? Our mortgage advisor has applied elsewhere for one but i worry that if Birmingham Midshire said no, they all will and we'll be stuck.

Any advice would be gratefully appreciated.

Thank You!

  • When you say that you didn't know you had the catalogue account - did someone else open it fraudulently, or was it opened by the catalogue without your knowledge, or did you just lose track of it?

If either of the first two options, then you may be able to do something about it.

I know how it feels. I found out in 2005 that I had defaulted on a credit card as a student. It only had 3 months to run on my credit history and I found out that it was actually a bank error and not my fault. Worth checking out all little details.

    Hope this helps.

  • Hi,

it was opened by an estranged house member without me knowing, they ordered goods and never paid for them. It took a full 4 YEARS for me to hear anything about it when i did i just paid all £252 off straight away, now im left paying the price.

  • You need to something about that. Was it opened in their name? If a demand was sent to your address under his name, then it is up to the catalogue to chase and find him - not yours.

If it was opened under your name then that is a criminal offence, and you should sort it out ASAP. Even if it was a long time ago, people can be traced - especially by the police ; )

I would go to the Citizens Advice Bureau and discuss this with them - or go to a free legal surgery. In either of the above scenarios, there is no way that that default should be on your account, especially when it affects something as important as this. GO GET HIM! AND DO IT NOW!
