Power stations and natural gas all emit harmful substances too.

Burning natural gas omits nitrogen oxides into the atmosphere. Power stations are burning fossil fuels for the most part and Biomass fuelled power stations are burning wood chips.

Non of us can sit on our high horses really. We all do what we can with the set up we find ourselves with.

I've grown up with coal fires, parkray, open fires with back boilers providing hot water and heating burning anything we could get our hands on, oil fuelled, night storage heaters and gas. I now have a multifuel stove and for some reason, that stove has attached a label to my being.

I have a multifuel stove because it helps me feel in control of heating my home. I had to do a lot of convincing DH, who wanted a gas fuelled multifuel-esk lookeelikee stove because it was instant, constant and clean. I very nearly went with it but I couldn't let go of the feeling of having some control and back up if things went wrong.

    Shoot me. I'm bad!
  • If you're bad girlie then I am too, I've had the stove for longer so I'm badder!!! BUT it's the very best thing we've ever invested in any home we've had because the simple act of lighting that stove on a cold winters day with wood we've scavenged, processed and seasoned turns that house into HOME in a way that nothing else ever has. I too like that feeling of security that no matter what the weather or the world does, we'll be warm and fed because of the stove. It's magic as a feeling isn't it?

If our carbon footprint is partially responsible for global warming - high power hoovers, performance cars, multi fuel stoves etc - what caused the end of the last ice age?

... also - anyone notice the volcano in Hawaii?

Wonder how many stoves or Chelsea tractors that equates to?
  • Maybe part of the problem is that there are more humans on this planet in 2018 then there have ever been before and humans like all other animals produce their own emissions through bodily functions and lifestyle choices and the numbers just continue to grow and the plethora of existing and new developments of types gadgets in the 'developed world' that become 'must haves' all need increasing amounts of generated energy to power them bringing it's own portion of emissions too.

When the posts were about sugar I forgot to mention liquorice. It seems to do well in the frozen north too.

  • For once - I'm taking what the Government says exactly at face value - ie that woodburners do pollute - end of....

Cigarettes do, e-vaping does, standard type cars do, coal fires do - obviously anything emitting fumes into our atmosphere is going to pollute it.

The difference being that, burning wood merely releases into the environment, the same carbon that the wood "sucked" out, while it was growing, whereas coal, oil (and oil sourced fuels like petrol and diesel) and gas releases carbon, that has been trapped for millions of years.
