Here we get mostly £20s. If we get £50 from the Co-Op bank machine up the road it's usually 2 x £20 and 1 x £10. ( A request for £60 gets you 2 x £20 and 2 x £10.). Another machine inside the shopping centre, though, often gives you 1 x £20 and 3 x £10. I can't remember whether that's from a bank or one of the independent companies; might be a Santander one.0

Thanks Ivyleaf.
I suppose if I was a real conspiracy theorist, I might think that the machine only dispenses £10 notes to me because of all the posts I have written about keeping a cash stash.
Maybe everyone else gets the £20's and £50's as normal.0 -
Not noticed that happening round here. Where do you take out cash? there might be more demand for £20s in a town centre where people are going out for the evening etc?It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0

Round here it seems to be down to which particular machine you use. The one in Waitrose invariably dispenses as many £20 notes as it can, as does the Tesco one and the one outside Metro Bank, but the one outside our post orifice is always tenners. We're all doomed0

I never use an ATM. I get cash out from the post office when it's open (two half days a week) as I'd quite like to keep it. Plus it gives me an excuse for a walk, and I get exactly the notes I want.0

I don't use an ATM either. Basically I'm too security-conscious to do so.
I just ask for cashback as I require it in shops when I'm buying something from suitable ones (eg the supermarket).
When I've needed larger amounts of cash then I've asked at the Post Office.
NB; Does anyone know if post offices have to accept cheques for paying into other banks yet? I know it's happening about now and not sure whether that's gone through yet. It's a facility I've been waiting for for literally years - as it simply hasnt made sense for them to refuse to do so. So I was distinctly pleased when I read recently that they are going to have to do so.0 -
If I take £300, it's always twenties and two tens. If I take £200, it's half in twenties and half in tens.
A pal with a shop regularly has knock-down drag-out fights with his bank because he wants £50 notes and they don't seem to want to let them out of the bank. They say they haven't got any, he suggests they go look in the safe, they say there's none in the safe either, he demands to speak to their manager and suddenly they can go to the safe and oh-so-curiously, there are £50 notes to be had.
Drives him ballistic. The bank has been playing this game for a year or two. He doesn't know why they're so reluctant to part with the fifties, he pays a fee for withdrawing cash from his business account anyway, why should they try to control what denominations it comes in?Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

Sounds like I was getting near the truth, doesn't it?
Yup. He's a cash-only business, nothing under-the-table, just the way he prefers to work and has worked for nearly half-a-century. He gets a lot of solictations from card companies who want to 'help' him by letting him take card payments at the shop. For just under 2% of the amount transacted, natch.
And once they've killed cash, 2% will only be the start of it........ use the folding stuff, lovely peeps, whenever you can.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

ZH was just mentioning how business has crashed in India because of the war against cash
I've just been reading about the comet/asteroid/meteor/meteorite/hunk of space that missed us yesterday - it was **inside** some satellite orbits! It was only about ten feet across, they say, but if it had come down, it wouldn't have been very nice for the people underneath ...2023: the year I get to buy a car0
