I used to put a twenty pound note (enough for a taxi home) in one of those coin bags from the bank and fasten it in the bottom of DDs coat pocket with a couple of safety pins when she used to go into town in the evening. That way if her bag was stolen she could at least get home..0

When we go away we wear bum bags,we have a selection of sizes and you can wear the bag bit at the front,we also use a couple of nappy pins to attach it to clothing for extra security. When we were in Florida my husband got a bit obsessed with buying them ......and the fact they came in different sizes, some were gigantic.0

Bought 63 rolls.
In the absence of colds/flu, and the squits, that should be a couple of years worth.0 -
We mostly keep a stock of about 50 rolls, it seems to get used up horribly quickly in our house. I think it is not used just for the intended purpose. So the stocks are topped up more often than I'd like.I was jumping to conclusions and one of them jumped back0

Ditto - someone (possibly some-two) seems to think it's good for removing make-up... I buy it in 36-roll packs, usually 2 or 3 at a time. Last time was just before Christmas and we're into the second pack already, even with just 4 of us here most of the time now. I had thought I'd be able to lower the amounts of loo roll and spuds I haul around now there are fewer of us, but we're still going through a sack of spuds in 4-6 weeks, too.Angie - GC Aug25: £106.61/£550 : 2025 Fashion on the Ration Challenge: 26/68: (Money's just a substitute for time & talent...)0 -
An aspect of survival is how much one is prepared to compromise one's intellectual honesty to fit in (or at least seem to fit in to the casual observer) with whatever is going on in one's society currently. Just how many people check out "which way the wind is blowing" and set their sails according to that and how many remain themselves/stay intellectually honest and open and admit how they really think/feel.
I can understand why a lot of people would turn intellectually dishonest if they thought it would help them survive more easily in a society that had problematic aspects to it. I often wonder whether I'd also be evasive/downright lie about my views if I thought I'd be safer for doing so - and could I actually think one way and say I thought another way or just try and be evasive?. McCarthyist America is one of the most recent Western society things I can think of - and there must have been a lot of "ducking and diving - so as not to be clobbered one" by some people then.
So - I shall be watching this one - and wondering if there might be any insights on how much some people "adapted" and others refused to.0 -
I think we already do have to watch what we say, particularly online.
On Landlordzone, if I even mention my African friend, the word 'African' will be deleted by the moderator. Perish the thought if I dare to have a laugh about the things my African tenants get up to.0 -

:cool:I have already noticed this - not on other websites - but very much so on this forum:cool:
It is difficult to say what one thinks/feels (and knows a lot of other people do too) without someone calling one (totally inaccurate) names like "racist" or "homophobe" or the like or trying to get a post deleted (ie a form of censorship). It is upsetting to be called names - even if one knows it really isn't true and it's just something someone with a different personal opinion has "hurled" at you.
So - I'm guessing a lot of people have already taken to being a bit intellectually dishonest and not admitting how they think/feel (so it seems like other opinions are more prevalent in society than they really are) and then sit back and gasp in astonishment at, for instance, a vote for Brexit. Well - if no-one tried to shut up those with differing views then it wouldnt have come as a surprise. People of both views would have had a much better idea just what proportion of the population shared their personal views and which didn't - rather than making assumptions about it that turned out to be wrong.
To me - I think the lynchpin as to deciding what way to think is to try and figure out what would apply in the vast majority of societies throughout most of known history and for both sexes. If something is pretty "universal" - then ignore the fact of if one's own particular society in this period of history and/or one's own sex are loudly proclaiming View A if View B is the normal one for most societies/most times/both sexes iyswim. Hence - I would have been an advocate for womens rights in, say, the 19th century and first half or so of 20th century (as society wasnt being fair to women) and now I'm an advocate of mens rights (as there are many not being fair to men). Same person/same view = fairness between the sexes.0 -

Apart from its "intended purpose", I use it to blow my nose, when I have a cold, flu etc., hence why I said "In the absence of colds/flu, and the squits".0
