I can hardly get a radio signal at all up here, just radio Scotland and Classic FM. And then only in a couple of odd corners of the house.

Having plowed through the old thread, I've located the Hurricane Lamps I bought locally.

They're the Supalite 10" Hurricane Storm Paraffin Fueled Lantern / Lamp, and they're available from Amazon, albeit a bit pricier than my local hardware store.

Although they are good quality, I prefer to stand them in a bund, just in case they should leak.

£world sells a 16cm round white dish (Catania brand), which are almost a perfect fit for the lamp base.

I'm definitely dubious about DAB in terms of prepperdom - I have two windup radios that prove it :D :rotfl: - but if I was buying a radio to use right now, I'd probably by a DAB of some description - the technology is there, its pretty ubiquitous now, better to have it than not have it, dosh permitting :)

I enquired of the British Biased Corporation only last year whether in the event of an emergency, they plan to broadcast nationally on FM or DAB, and the answer was "both".

Absolutely - I'm focussing on my fiction stories at the moment, and my answer was coming from TEOTWAWKI :D

  • He Who Knows says FM would be a better bet as DAB takes about twice as much power from a battery. If you have a wind up radio then that wouldn't be a problem but if you were relying on a battery one you'd need a bigger stock of batteries than you think. Transmissions wouldn't be a problem as the radio companies would have massive capacity in the form of back up batteries.

I know this isn't very mony saving and you may not be that fussed on the old technology, but have a look at this. It's a Roberts portable internet radio and could be something like what could be useful to you.
From what I know you link it into your wifi connection and then you can browse radio stations from around the world - it's like a modern day equivilent of shortwave radio. Also, all the BBC stations are there, other local Scottish stations, ones that are local to your region also.
As I say, not very mse but could be practical more than anything else. Maybe worth a look at....

    That's a useful thing!

I'm rather amused by the "People who bought this item also bought....". A collection of radios, and shampoo and conditioner :D

Beware the software updates on Roberts' internet radios. The first time ours offered to update, I OK'd it, thinking how geeky I was being by so doing.

Then I realised that the damned update had wiped out all 26 of my preset stations ...

Anyhow, IMO internet radio's not going to be much good to us if the SHTF bigtime. Isn't the interweb reckoned to be one of the first casualties?
