  • A new thread is a good idea I think, I've lost so many posts already though when threads vanish overnight. If this one vanishes too I'll be back to single figures again.

Sounds grim DfV Wishing you all a speedy recovery.

MrsLW Be interested to hear if the power outing highligts any gaps in prepping: though it sounds as if you've got all bases covered.
I found a gap in my preps today. We ran out of marmalade. This almost caused a meltdown at breakfast. 12lbs is now cooling on the table ready to be fitted into the Armageddon cupboard when it cools down, and I've put mamade and sugar on the shopping list ready for our next supermarket trip. I usually make my own from scratch but the ready pulp is very useful in emergencies.

I use mamade all the time, I just can't be doing with cutting those marms up... :p (my dad used to say that when we were little and complaining about bits in the marmalade. He'd just go "oh no need to worry about those, those are the marms.."). it's still better than most shop bought and certainly for the price.

Hope everyone gets better soon DforV

  • A spare tin of Mamade is an essential part of my preps, also a tin of grapefruit. In combination they make a fantastic marmalade, just add a bit more sugar too.
  • We went out to meet DD2 and the Oreo child but we got back just after 2 to a dark house! However could light the hob because I have matches, I could boil water on it because I have a whistling kettle that's not electric, I could see in the dark kitchen because I have solar lighting permanently charged up to use, we lit the woodstove in the lounge and are warm and I lit my jumble sale candelabra with 9 tea lights in so we could read and we used the wind up radio for the news. As we poured our second cup of tea the power came back on but we're having flickers so all is left on just in case. I even made up some skimmed milk for the tea from dry rather than open the fridge …..prepping works and makes life a great deal comfier than it could been!
  • Went down to visit Mum today and a fair chunk of the county is in darkness after the storm passed through; my niece was sent home from work as there was no heat, no light, no pooters, and, horror of all horrors, no kettle! So we got to see her too, which was lovely. We chased the storm back across the county; clear skies overhead but a massive bank of boiling black clouds on the horizon ahead of us; it was quite apocalyptic-looking! Monsoon-like rain & leaves in every drain meant I was driving through massive puddles, which is easy enough in my van, but a bit scary watching people hit them in small fast cars which were then sent skittering sideways across the carriageway with traffic in the other lane. However no harm seems to have come to anyone, so all's well that ends well. Personally I think not going at 80mph in horrible conditions at dusk is a good idea, but I'm aware that's - well, a bit old-fashioned.

Thriftwizard, I covet your van more & more. Just sayin'.

As for old fashioned, you're not the only one! Guy we know running a tool stall has decided to stuff the bottom line, he's not doing more driving out of daylight. I just so wish my flexi could let me do the same but at lest I can work from home some of the time.

Prepping comes into it's own (or at least having the equipment to cope without power) tomorrow as we've had notification from our power supplier that the supply will be off from 8.30am to 4.30pm (they hope) to fix a fault with part of the infrastructure locally in an effort to prevent power problems in the future. Thank goodness for solar lights, Kelly kettles, wind up radios, wood burning stoves and thermal base layers among many other things that will let us remain comfortable while the fault is dealt with. Hopefully it will be over sooner in the day rather than later and it IS only hours but I'll use it as practise for the future and learn a little from the experience.

Us too, Mrs LW (we're in SW Wales, so not near you afaik ;))......

Ours went off at about 9am and was back on just after 3pm. After a spot of gardening DH and I caught up on our reading - by candlelight - lit the snug wood burner early and snuggled down with hot drinks (Ribena and hot chocolate as neither of us drink tea or coffee) with water heated on the stove. Head torches for going upstairs to where our current only toilet is located.

We're relatively new to prepping - but love having a larder full of options just in case - and started mainly because we got used to making do when we first moved here and had no water, heating, flushing toilet etc for a few months.......

Tbh, today felt quite indulgent compared to earlier in the year, lol!

  • Hats off to you two Phoebe, well done on having everything you needed in place and making use of it all. It's a very satisfying feeling knowing that you can cope without any outside assistance and be comfortable and safe isn't it?
  • It must be very satisfying to know that what you have in place works so well Phoebe and MrsLW As you both say it's a good feeling to know that not only can you cope you can cope and still live comfortably. :)
  • I was in Poundland yesterday and spotted a 360 orb robot light for £2. I decided to buy 2 ,they are amazing .They give off a very bright light if you google it a YouTube video comes up,they also come with 3aaa batteries installed.
