I was making some of the same comments as people on here.

I love it when they are sure that their favourite products were changed and they weren't.:rotfl:

I was glad they had some information about protein on a mainstream programme as I think some people don't understand how easy it is to get enough protein on a vegetarian diet.

I thought the soup part was interesting too, I usually have a tin or two of soup in the cupboard, but I didn't realise the ingredients were so fresh.:)

I missed it last night as I was out, so will have to catch up on iplayer. Think I will be as frustrated at it as some of you, but still I like the program.
As a family of 2 adults, a 10 year old and a cat my weekly shopping bill only comes to £60-80 a week.

I don't have teenager yet but is it normal for a 17 year old not to be able to cook?

My 10 year old can cook. Nowt fancy but she can do spag bol, chilli, curry, fajitas, etc.

As a Guide leader I work with 10-14 year olds, and some can cook really well, and most could manage beans on toast or microwaving a jacket potato at least when they join Guides. When they leave they are at least able to manage rice and pasta, with a sauce that involves browning meat and adding stuff to it.

I just wish they would have what I would call a normal ordinary family on there The folk they pick don't really seem that fussed that they are spending over £16k per year on feeding four people.

True they both work but what on earth are those two girls doing sitting around being waited on by Mum.

Both my late OH and I worked full time and my two DDs could feed both themselves, and often us by the time they got into their teens .

s for tinned soup instead of chilled well that was just silly I can make a vat of soup that is far nicer than anything from a tin for far less than what was shown.

I was surprised at the Mum as she seemed to know how to cook but just CBA I think

I'm sorry but to spend over £300 per week on food for four people is a bit obscene .

As I sat and watched I wondered how someone who maybe had just returned that day from a food bank was feeling with three days worth of food which probably had to be streeetched to 6 days if possible.

These programmes seem to show off the worst of people. I would like to see a few programmes where the presenter didn't patronisingly say 'Well change from this brand to this brand and you will save x amount of cash ' Doh No !!!!! sherlock !

I would bet the farm on the fact that once the tv camera's have gone, this family will slip back into their old lazy ways.

I would lay money that no way are those girls going to learn to cook all the time they have Mum waiting on them hand foot and finger

How about a programme where someone who has been given their three days food from a food bank is taught how to make it steeeetch with a few simple meals .

Or just a programme where stating the bleeding obvious is not required .

The gurning man is just so irritating, spouting on about protein content to someone who has to live on basic ESA money or JSA isn't really helpful

The BBC should get out of their ivory towers and talk to the real people who are struggling to make ends meet, not the ones who need to save a few bob to holiday in Cannes

That is a program I would really like to see made. It would help a lot of people, and would be interesting to watch for a lot of others.

Would need to be done properly though. Some of these shows that cook on a budget assume that you have a well stocked pantry, spice rack, herbs in the garden to supplement the food. Also needs to take into account people not wanting to spend a lot on gas and electric to make it.

My son is eight and loves to cook. He can make a full English with supervision. This summer I'm going to leave him to it with simple meals like beans on toast, and he can cook for both of us. Little by little and he will be able to make many meals by the time hes off to uni. They might have been teachers but they weren't preparing their children to cope in life. I see that as my main mum job. Xx

I loved the way the older girl dictated that she had to have expensive protein for her swimming training but planned on living on Pot Noodle when she went to university! Typical of so may teenagers!:rotfl:

I think the mum was perfectly capable of budgeting and cooking if they genuinely wanted to save money but she'd lulled herself into 'deserving' all the expensive shortcuts.

One of my bugbears on here is when someone prefaces their post with 'I work full time......'. What then usually follows is a list of excuses why OS living wouldn't work for them. When I worked full time (60+ hours a week) I found that being OS and organised saved me time (and of, course money). Doing a meal plan and one weekly shop with a list was invaluable. I didn't have to think each day what we'd have or nip into shops for 'a few bits' or waste food because I didn't have a plan to eat it. Some Bolognese or chilli in the SC and then portioned up for the freezer meant I always had a HM ready meal to hand for CBA days. It really isn't rocket science, it just needs a bit of planning.

Why, for example, did they go together to do the weekly shop especially as she wasn't to be trusted not to make impulse buys? Why did they need top up shops? A few minutes sitting in the kitchen basing a meal plan on what you've got in (another household with cupboards bursting at the seams) and adding only essential ingredients to the shopping list would save a fortune. If only one of them went to the shops the other could be at home catching up on other chores or work.

I think the programme should focus more on planning. What it does now is just copy the current lifestyle and save a bit with a few cheaper items and minimal scratch cooking.

I could have been wrong but I didn't notice any Aldi or Lidl items yesterday? I never understand why they blatantly advertise brands as in the supermarket they shop in and the taste tests but try to hide which cheaper brands they change to. Why??

Their not saving money by buying soup in cans.
Teach them to make their own.

I've got some scuzzy mushrooms that I won't use in any recipe before they reach the stage of having to be thrown away so I've chopped them up and they are on the hob right now to make some soup.
I've a bit of cream left over from strawberries so should be nice and tasty.

Didn't watch the programme but I've recorded it.

I'm so glad I'm not the only person who wanted to shout at the tv!
Saw the new series advertised in the TV magazine and immediately went off to find my foam brick ready to throw at the tv. :D
