You are right that in the scheme of things, it will make no noticeable difference. However, the anaylsis is still valid as growth periods do outnumber negative periods. My primary concern at this point would be whether the individual has the stomach for the investment risk they are taking.

My thinking is that even splitting a large sum over a few months not only potentially avoids a large drop in a short period of time, but also if the market were in a slower decline the effect of reduction might be less obvious or dramatic. This wouldn't solve the problem of investing above a risk profile but might make the impact less extreme.0
