Joining a GYM - The cheap way! If possible!

Basically, im 18 and off to Uni next week but I know I wont have the motivation to go to a gym at Uni as I'll either be studying (very hard!!!) or havit A BIT of fun.
I wanted to go with my mates who live locally, most are 18 but there are two who are still 17 and was wondering what gyms if any would let them have memberships?
I saw the Pru Health insurance thread, where you sign up and get a years membership for free, but health insurance, well this particular one, is for 18 and overs, which suites me but not my two mates who I would really love to go with!
There is a Canons health gym near me, Im in Central London btw, gave them a call regarding membership fees and was told that I'll get a call back but no news as of yet.
Not really looking to pay more than £25 p/m, dont mind the one off 'activation fee' that some charge. Would go atleast once if not twice a week, defiently more during half-terms and holidays.
Any advice on where to look? what to ask for? Never joined or had a membership with a gym before, dont bits and bobs at home and college. Also, canons accept anyone over 16, got fitness first and a few others but would like your advice first.
Thanks,
-MoE-

Try your local authority sport centres. Where I live, we have 3 good quality goverment funded sport centres. They are cheap and good and usually quite empty of people which is a bonus having the place to yourself almost.
If you don't work or are a student it costs £1.10 each time you go or if you work it's £2.20 each time, or they offer a monthly membership of around £20 which covers full use of the gym anytime + free entry to other sport centre amenities like swimming or sauna.0 -
Sorry for got to mention:- the sports centre expects people using the gym to be 16 yrs or over, so if it maybe the same where you are. They also state that you need to attend an induction which costs around £7. At the induction a trainer will show you around the equipment so you and he are aware of what you are doing.0

definately look into using the uni gym, the uni i went to had a pretty good gym and it was much cheaper than all the big name ones, it was a good way of getting to know people too, and it doesn't have to take up too much of your studying or partying time!
Besides, you don't feel so bad about going out on the pish if you've had a bit of a work out beforehand!

Uni gym is one option but I wanted to go with my mates as well, so, can do Uni gym which is free and go to a gym in my local area such as Canons which is ab ig name but is one of the best and biggest in the city.
Its got everything and all my mates would go if the price is right because if I was to be with one mate or even by myself and go gym, I hardly would have the motivation to go frequently or even once a week. With mates its a different story.
Will wait after Ramadan finishes as it starts tomorow, can't go gym without drinking or eating before/after.
Thanks for the responce,
