I am about to do the same myself (interest only) and have been informed by my broker it is a remortgage even though I am currently mortgage free.

Part of the problem in using comparison sites for mortgages is that they won't find the solution for you. They can actually fill your head with mis-information.

Our original poster's in-laws should be getting one to one advice on this.
    I am a Mortgage Broker

I've just done this with Halifax. Its just a remortgage of an unencumbered property.

They put a charge on the deeds and transferred the money to my solicitor who in turn passed it to me.

"I need two hundred thousand pounds for a life saving operation."

"What are the chances of survival?"

    "50:50."

    "Application denied."

They used to make you tick "home improvement", "capital raising" and then explain what you want the money for.

What business is it of theirs if you want to put your brat through public school, buy a car, or a sex change operation?

All you can do is move on and find a lender that will lend you money without sticking their noses into your business.
