Thanks for those suggestions. I will look into them as they are a 'mid-way' option to look at. I've heard, perhaps unwarranted, that parts of Dalkeith are rather undesirable, the same for Gilmerton.

Am still looking and it seems my house sale is well under way so I need to get a move on with planning another property viewing trip shortly.

Got to say over the last little while there have been quite a few properties of the sort I am looking for come up for sale, but seriously only 2 that I would seriously think of viewing with a view to purchase even with a bit of a flexible upper budget.

Yup,Dalkeith covers the whole spectrum from rough to very affluent.
Coincidently Im working there this week.
