Ciao or other review sites?

I was a member of Dooyoo and wrote a couple of reviews on it a long while ago, but I read that they aren't paying anymore (is that right?!)

So I've signed up to Ciao and I'm wondering if it's any good? And if it's not, what other sites are good for writing reviews? I'm guessing that it's based on reciprocal upvoting of other peoples reviews and you get some pennies for good reviews?

I used to do Ciao and yes, it works exactly like you think it does. In fact a lot of people used to post the same reviews on both sites so I expect you'll find a number of the same people on there. I haven't done it in ages so I can't comment on current rates of pay.

Slicethepie is a decent 'paid to review' site, where you're just reviewing stuff you look at or listen to on their website, and the reviews aren't published, but personally I'd only recommend them when they've got a promo on.
Currently they have though. They're paying an extra 25 cents on homeware items, so I'm getting about 35-37 cents for each.

There's a topic about Slicethepie here:

There are some bonus items in fashion as well but they seem to come and go.

  • I'm on Ciao and I'm close to giving up on it. They changed their bonus system a few months ago so now only a few categories are eligible for it. I used to write a lot of book reviews, but they've been removed from the bonus system, and without it it's really not worth the time and effort I put in to writing reviews (800+ words is pretty standard for me).

You can only cash out at £5, you either need to post several reviews a day or get the bonus in order to cash out within a year.

    I'll look at Slicethepie, thanks!

RE categories that aren't paid on ciao, how do I find out which ones are paid and which ones aren't? It's a bit of a pain in the !!!! to navigate! It looks like the pets category is paid at the moment which is where I will write a lot of my first reviews tbh (pet rodents and I've gone through a lot of cages and toys!) and I could write thousands of reviews on toys and buggies and anything child related thanks to work!

  • All categories are eligible to be paid but some products won't get you any money. Only a few categories are eligible to receive the "Diamond" (bonus) award.

To find out how much you'll get paid for a review you look at the £ signs next to the title. £ means you get 0.05p for each rating someone gives you, ££ gets you 1p per rating, and £££ gets you 2p. If there's no £ mark then you don't get paid anything for the review. Then if you get lots of ratings in a month you may get around £2 from the Diamond fund, more if your review is extremely popular. I find getting 30+ "Very Helpful" ratings normally gets me £2, but lots of people seem to have left Ciao after the recent changes so getting to the 30 mark proved to be really difficult recently.

Review sites don't really pay money anymore, not decent money anyway. You'd probably be better to spend £11-£15 for a years website/hosting with Wordpress from GoDaddy, or similar hosting company, and posting your reviews there. Then you can add Adsense and make yourself a few pennies, after a few months when you rank on Google etc, and with good SEO, you could make yourself a nice bit of money.

  • Dooyoo doesn't pay anymore but you can use the same reviews on Ciao by just copying and pasting. I usually put at the bottom of the review that they have been posted elsewhere just in case someone thinks I've lifted the review. I've been on Ciao since Dooyoo stopped paying but have found that Ciao is a lot of work now and am seriously wondering if it's worth the time and effort.

They have this time system in place for rating which is stupid as I often have time to read a review three times over but when I try and rate it makes me wait. They have made a few categories non paying and also reduced other opportunities to make money. I've also found a few other members are fairly pernickety when it comes to how you write and how you rate even if you are a very active member which annoys me when I put so much into the site. I've heard a few other members suggest Ciao might not last but it's still worth it but it's just not as easy to earn now.

If you enjoy writing then it might be worth looking at Postloop. Here, you get paid for posting on forums in pretty much the same manner as you would do here. Obviously the posts need to be quality and it can be a bit of a slog at times but it's possible to make around £12-15 per week.
